MT defeats Jaguars 68-67 in OT
MOBILE, Ala. – Middle Tennessee men's hoops improved to 4-4 after a thrilling 68-67 overtime victory on the road at South Alabama (2-4) on Saturday afternoon.
Jaqawn Raymond drilled a huge game-tying three pointer with 26 seconds remaining in regulation to send the game to overtime with the teams deadlocked at 61.
Jacquez Rozier made his eighth start of the year alongside Perrin Buford, Raymond, Giddy Potts and Marcus Tarrance. This marked the sixth different starting line-up for MT this season with a freshman starting in all but one game this season.
MT jumped off to a quick 4-0 lead off of two buckets by Buford. The Blue Raiders would lead be as many as 10 points in the first half but the Jaguars would keep working their way back in as Middle Tennessee went into the locker room with a 32-30 lead.
Rozier led the Blue Raiders with eight first-half points and six rebounds, going 4-of-4 from the field.
South Alabama grabbed its first lead of the game to open the second half after a dunk and a foul shot to follow.
Reggie Upshaw scored three-consecutive Blue Raider baskets to bring some second half energy. Upshaw recorded eight of his 10 points in the game in the second half.
As the Blue Raiders trailed by five points with two minutes remaining, Edward Simpson drained a three-pointer to make it a two point game.
Trailing 58-61 with 26 second left in regulation, Raymond's three took the game to overtime.
The Blue Raiders gained a 68-64 lead in overtime with 13 seconds left in overtime. The Jaguars Taishaun Johnson knocked down a three-pointer with seven second on the clock as Simpson fouled him on the play, giving South Alabama a chance to tie it up. Johnson's free throw would not land as the Blue Raiders closed out the game with the one point victory.
MT held the Jaguars to 28.6 percent shooting when it counted in overtime, despite South Alabama finishing the game shooting 42.9 percent.
Three Blue Raiders registered a double-digit scoring outing with Rozier leading the way with 12 points, followed by Raymond with 11 points and Upshaw with 10 points off the bench. The veterans went 13-of-27 from the field with MT finishing the day shooting 44.6 percent with 26 points coming from the bench.
"It's the first time they have gotten beat at home this year," Head Coach Kermit Davis said. "I think we got off to a good start offensively, that was the key for us the past three days. The ball movement was good and then some kind of the three foot gods of basketball took over again we just started missing layup after layup before we were able to finally settle in."
Middle Tennessee continues its road swing with a trip to Akron a week from today on Dec. 13 followed by a game at Oklahoma State on Dec. 16 on ESPNU.
