MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee soccer collected a 1-0 overtime victory against Murray State at home on Friday evening to advance to 3-2-1 on the season.
Angie Lai put away her first goal of the season in the 98th minute to give the Blue Raiders the win in their fourth overtime game of the year. The goal was scored off a set piece with Tori Hawkins passing the ball to Lai at the corner of the 18 yard box where she sent her shot to upper left corner of the goal.
"The biggest positive is that we won the game," Head Coach Aston Rhoden said. "We practice our set pieces every day and to see us score three or four times off a set piece this season is wonderful."
Murray State started the game by putting a lot of pressure on MT's back line to earn four first-half corner kicks, while both teams recorded three shots in the half.
"Murray is a very strong team," Rhoden said. "They came out extremely aggressive and quick and put us under pressure. It took us a while to recover but by the second half we were more composed on the ball and took more opportunities. "
The Blue Raiders outshot the Racers 17-11 and forced Murray State's goalkeeper to secure five saves in the match. Kelsey Brouwer earned the shutout between the posts for the Blue Raiders with four saves.
The goal for Lai marked her third career goal and first ever game-winning goal, while Brouwer grabbed her 17th career win for the Blue Raiders.
MT goes on the road next for a game at Ole Miss on Sunday at 5 p.m. that will be broadcast on the SEC Network.
"Ole Miss is going to be a strong opponent," Rhoden said. They have a lot of quality players and a quality coach so I think it will be a big test for us but it will be a game that will prepare us well for conference play."
