MURFREESBORO, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee Soccer secured a 2-0 victory against Austin Peay to improve to 2-2-1 on the season on Sunday night.
The Blue Raiders pushed numbers forward early as they had five corner kicks in the first half with several opportunities coming from the flanks. MT connected on its first goal of the game off of a corner kick by Amalie Anderdal to the back post with 10 seconds left in the half as junior defender Emily Jorgenson put it away for the 1-0 lead. The goal was her first of the season and fifth of here career.
"The big difference for us was that we kept possession of the ball," Head Coach Aston Rhoden said. "I don't think we were as effective as we needed to be in the first half but in the second half we were more offensive minded."
The Blue Raiders got on the board again as defender Kelsie Roberts head a cross from Tori Hawkins to the back of the net for her second career goal.
"It's an added benefit for us to have our defenders push forward because games can be won off the set pieces and we got strong headers this year and both of them scored off of headers tonight," Rhoden said.
The Blue Raiders out-shot the Lady Govs 18-8 with five shots on frame. Angie Lai, Kathy Thomas and Anderdal led the squad with three shots a piece.
"Tonight you could see where we had more consecutive passes and I think the longer we keep the ball the more we can create opportunities for each other and that was the difference tonight," Rhoden said.
Kelsey Brouwer secured her first shutout of the season with two saves while Austin Peay falls to 1-5-0 on the season.
MT will see the pitch again on September 12th as the team hosts Murray State at Dean A. Hayes Stadium.
