10/22/2015 3:32:00 PM | Men's Basketball, Women's Basketball
Fans are invited to come early for "Trunk or Treat"
MURFREESBORO - All Blue Raider supporters are invited to tip-off the 2015-16 season with the Middle Tennessee men's and women's basketball teams at "Murphy Madness" on Oct. 29.
Admission to the event is free and two lucky fans will have the opportunity to win a new Mustang or a 55" TV. The event will also provide an opportunity to get a first-hand look at the current crop of Blue Raiders' skills on the hardwood.
The festivities begin at 5:30 p.m. with Trunk or Treat in the Greenland Lot hosted by ADPi and other student organizations. From there, fans are encouraged to enter the Murphy Center at approximately 6 p.m. for Trick or Treat with the teams and athletic department personnel on the Murphy Center concourse.
Murphy Madness will begin at 7 p.m. when the Blue Raiders will be introduced along with this year's hype videos. The sides will hold a shootout contest and then square-off for a coed scrimmage.
After the game, the best rim-rockers will be on display for a dunk contest and head coaches Kermit Davis and Rick Insell will thank and address the audience to close the event.
This year's "Murphy Madness" will be Insell's 11th at the helm of the women's program and this year he welcomes back eight letterwinners and three starters. The list of returners includes Olivia Jones who was voted the C-USA Preseason Player of the Year by league coaches. The Blue Raiders were also selected as the preseason favorites to win the C-USA Championship.
In addition to seeing the offseason progress of MT's returners, fans will get the opportunity to evaluate the team's five newcomers.
"Murphy Madness is a good way for our players to take a break from the rigors of class and practice and have some fun with our great fan base and the students," Insell said. "Our men's and women's program work well together and I think you see that reflected in this event.
"I think it's a good way to introduce our players and new players to our fans and have a fun laid-back night of basketball. I'm looking forward to it."
Davis will attend his 14th "Murphy Madness" this season and returns four starters from last year's team including junior forward Reggie Upshaw who was named to the C-USA Preseason All-Conference Team.
The Blue Raiders hope that their four newcomers, along with their holdovers, can excite fans with their play and athleticism at "Murphy Madness" and throughout the 2015-16 season.
"We have some very loyal men's and women's basketball fans and this event is really for them," Davis said. "It is a great evening for them to be able to come out and see our teams play, especially the newcomers.
"Last year I thought we had a terrific turnout of nearly 4,000 people and we sure hope to grow on that number this year."
