True Blue Turnbow Project returns for third year
12/8/2015 6:10:00 AM | General
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – For the third year running, Middle Tennessee Senior Associate Athletic Director Whit Turnbow will sponsor a coat drive that will benefit local children in need during the winter months.
The "True Blue Turnbow Project" was a success in its first two years, collecting 1,251 coats last year and over 1,000 in its debut.
The Blue Raider athletic department will be collecting coats in the Murphy Center at home basketball games on Thursday, Dec. 17.
The women's game on the 17th against Missouri State will tip at 11 a.m. and will be followed by the men's game against Belmont at 6 p.m. Doors will open 90 minutes prior to tip.
"We are thrilled to be a part of this outreach again this year," said Turnbow. "There are over 1,000 documented homeless children in Murfreesboro and Rutherford County and we want to make sure that they can at least stay warm this winter.
"So many of the things we take for granted, such as grabbing a coat on our way out the door on a frigid day, are not an option for others. As a community, we can have a huge impact on this need."
To donate, people are encouraged to drop off clean, gently used or new coats at any entrance to Murphy Center on Thursday, Dec. 17. As an alternative, fans can also drop off coats at the athletic department offices any time between the hours of 8:00 AM and 4:30 PM any day Monday-Friday.
Murfreesboro City Schools and Rutherford County Schools will assist with distributing the coats via teacher referrals at each school.
Adult coats will be delivered to area homeless shelters.
Following is a list of other drop off locations:
Murfreesboro City Schools (2553 S. Church Street, Murfreesboro, TN 37127)

VARIOUS COMMENTS FROM PREVIOUS YEARS
"I had a child come to school this morning with no coat, hat, or gloves. He had the beginning signs of frostbite. We warmed him up with one of the coats you provided then went to buy him a hat and gloves. He is VERY proud of his coat and is wearing it in the classroom. Thanks for reaching out and making a difference in this child's life."
"I had some students that came to class smiling and talking about how much they liked their new, warm coats. Thank you so much for making these kids' day. One of the students I had never seen smile until today!
