MT Knocks Off Louisville in Extra Innings, 5-3

CLERMONT, Fla. – The Middle Tennessee softball team (7-3) finished with a solid 4-1 mark at the Dot Richardson Classic after scoring five unanswered runs to knock off Louisville (5-5) in extra innings, 5-3.
For MT, it was the first win over an ACC school since a 7-4 win over Virginia Tech in 2012, and it's also the best 10-game start since 2004 when the Blue Raiders started 7-3. They went on to finish that season 35-23.
Senior Caitlin McClure improved to 2-0 on the year as she went the full eight innings, tying her career-high and allowing two earned runs. The right-hander stepped up allowing just two hits over the final four innings and putting up zeroes across the scoreboard.
"Our team showed great poised today," said head coach Jeff Breeden. "We did not get rattled in a very close game with Louisville. (Caitlin) McClure pitched a dandy today! It's fun to watch this team get better every day."
Junior Carlie Jenkins led the squad with a 2-for-4 showing from the plate and three RBIs. The Rockwall, Texas native finished the weekend batting a .467 average from the plate (7-of-15) with 11 RBIs, three doubles, a home run and scored five runs.
Freshman Cor'Nisha Birdsong notched a hit and an RBI, while senior teammate Samantha Nieves tallied an RBI, and juniors Cheyenne Willis and Megan Griffith both tallied hits. Senior Alma Cortez also recorded a hit as well.
After falling down 3-0 in the bottom of the fourth inning, the Blue Raiders dug deep and responded with three runs of their own to tie the game at 3-all.
MT took advantage of Louisville's two errors in the inning with junior Randi Cookus and senior Alma Cortez reaching base thanks to the miscues. In the ensuing at-bat, Birdsong knocked an RBI double to drive in Cookus, and Jenkins would score Cortez and Cookus on a two out two-RBI single to tie the game.
Both teams failed to score before the end of the seventh inning, forcing an extra frame to decide the contest. Just after Freeman advanced to third off a wild pitch, Jenkins came through again for MT as the first baseman doubled to left field to plate Freeman.
Nieves put the Blue Raiders up 5-3 after she grounded out to the pitcher and drove in Jenkins from third. In the final at-bat for Louisville, McClure came up with a key first out as she threw out the runner trying to advance to third from second.
The Lilburn, Ga., native forced two more outs the team needed despite the Cardinals getting two on the base paths.
Over the weekend, the Blue Raiders outscored their opponents 25-12 while the pitching trio of McClure, junior Kelci Cheney and sophomore Megan Chocallo had an impressive ERA of 2.06, over four runs better than last weekend at the Mississippi State Tournament.
MT will head back to Mississippi for the Ole Miss Red and Blue Classic next weekend (Feb. 20-22) in Oxford, Miss.
