Blue Raiders win 61-51 at home
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee men's hoops came out on top over visiting Southern Miss by a score of 61-51 in a Thursday night C-USA clash at Murphy Center.
Senior Marcus Tarrance sparked the Blue Raiders with a team-high 15 points, leading MT to a season sweep over the Golden Eagles. Freshman Giddy Potts made a career-best five field goals to reach double figures with 14 points.
Middle Tennessee (13-10, 6-4 C-USA) led the majority of the game, including the entire second stanza, despite shooting 39 percent overall and making just one shot from the field over the final 10 minutes of regulation.
Of the Blue Raiders' 17 field goals, nine were from three-point range accounting for over half of their made baskets.
"Give Southern Miss a lot of credit," head coach Kermit Davis said. "I thought for those guys being short-handed they did a great job. We were fortunate we hung on and got enough stops."
The first half saw MT hit two three-pointers and make three of its first five from the field to establish an early 8-5 lead at the first media timeout. The Blue Raiders led the rest of the half and took a 33-23 advantage at the break. MT went up as much as 11 after an Upshaw jumper made it 30-19 at the 2:28 mark.
The Blue Raiders built their largest lead of 13 shortly after halftime, but the visitors trimmed the deficit to 38-33 with 14:44 left.
Tarrance checked in for the first time in the second half with 11:10 on the clock and MT ahead 42-36. The senior then connected from behind the arc on back-to-back possessions, putting the Blue Raiders back up by double digits.
Southern Miss (6-15, 1-9 C-USA) never got back within seven as the Blue Raiders converted 10 free throws to seal the game down the stretch. Chip Armelin scored a game-high 21 as the Golden Eagles shot 45 percent overall.
The battle on the glass was even at 28-28, but MT established a defensive presence by forcing 19 Southern Miss turnovers. The Blue Raider bench played a key role and outscored the visitors 27-7.
With the win, MT improves to 13-2 when scoring at least 60 points this season.
