Blue Raiders suffer 73-62 setback
Â
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Reggie Upshaw poured in a career-high 21 points, but Middle Tennessee (13-11, 6-5 C-USA) could not overcome a 12-point halftime deficit in a tough 73-62 loss to LA Tech (18-6, 9-2 C-USA) Saturday night in Murphy Center.
The Blue Raiders got within five points when Jaquel Richmond hit a three-pointer with 9:47 left in regulation, but MT couldn't bring it closer as LA Tech shot 50 percent and had four players reach double figures in the scoring column.
"Give Louisiana Tech all of the credit," head coach Kermit Davis said. "Their best players played really well. They just pressured and you have to go make basketball plays. I don't know how many opportunities we had within four or five. We were intimidated around the goal, but give them credit. We just got beat by a really good team."
Upshaw led all scorers and tallied 17 of the Blue Raiders' first 25 points. The senior made a career-best three treys while hauling in six rebounds. Marcus Tarrance (14 points) reached double digits for the second-straight game, while Jacquez Rozier added eight points (4-of-4 FGs) and six rebounds. Richmond also pulled down a career-high eight boards.
The first half was tightly contested for the opening 16 minutes as an Upshaw three-pointer tied it 19-19 with 5:31 on the clock. LA Tech then cranked up the tempo and closed out the final four-plus minutes on a 14-2 run, giving the Bulldogs a 33-21 halftime advantage.
LA Tech quickly extended its lead to 15 after the break, but the Blue Raiders hit 6-of-8 from the field to stay within 11 points at the under-16 media timeout. The Blue Raiders outscored the Bulldogs 41-40 in the second half, but LA Tech's 61-percent shooting effort in the second stanza kept MT from posing a real threat.
Richmond hit his first three to make it 48-42 with 12 minutes left in regulation before his second trey cut it to five later on.
"We needed that one extra play, one extra three to get it to three or four." Davis added. "We couldn't and then they shot the ball well from the line down the stretch."
The Blue Raiders held the rebounding edge 35-33 and outscored the visitors 16-4 on second-chance points.
LA Tech limited the Blue Raiders to 40 percent shooting overall and the Bulldogs' bench contributed 23 points, outscoring MT reserves by three.
Upshaw's game-opening basket gave MT its only lead of the game.
Middle Tennessee will hit the road next week when it returns to action against Rice on Thursday, Feb. 12. The C-USA tilt is scheduled for a 7 p.m. tip.
