MT comeback not enough in 71-68 2OT loss
HOUSTON, Texas – Middle Tennessee dropped a thrilling double overtime game at Rice, 71-68, to fall to 13-12 on the season and 6-6 in Conference USA action.
Despite a rough start the Blue Raiders rallied back to force the game in to overtime.
The Owls opened up the game with a 9-0 run with the Blue Raiders held scoreless in the first three minutes. Turnovers proved to cripple the Blue Raiders early with four in the first four minutes of the game as Rice was able to grab a 12-1 lead by the first media timeout.
MT's first field goal finally landed five minutes into the game as Darnell Harris muscled his way to the basket.
The Blue Raiders fought back by forcing Rice to take difficult shots, with the Owls going 2-for-11 in a four minute span bringing MT within five points.
The Owls three-point shooting hurt the Blue Raiders in the first half as they shot 50 percent going 6-of-12 from behind the arc to take a 27-18 lead at halftime.
The Blue Raiders worked their way back within a two possession game after a 6-0 run in the first five minutes of the second half but untimely turnovers continued to hurt the Blue Raiders with the Owls recording 21 points off turnovers in the game.
Jaqawn Raymond changed the game in the closing minutes with a three-pointer to bring the Blue Raiders within six points. After the Owls turned it over on the inbound, Raymond was fouled taking another trey and made all three from the charity stripe to make it a one possession game at 53-50 with two minutes remaining.
After a Buford free throw brought the score to 53-51, Raymond once again came up big with a blocked shot that Reggie Upshaw would drive in on the other end of the court to tie the game.
On the Owls final possession of regulation they heaved up a shot at the buzzer but the officials ruled it was not taken in time to send the Blue Raiders and the Owls to overtime.
MT took its first lead of the game in overtime as Buford put the Blue Raiders up 55-53 with a layup.
The Blue Raiders rally was sparked by a 12-0 run starting with two minutes remaining in the second half and continuing a minute into overtime.
It came down to free throws in the closing seconds of overtime as Raymond headed to the line for a one-and-one. With the missed free throw, Tarrance pulled down the rebounds and sunk the game-tying layup at the buzzer to send the game to double overtime tied 66-66.
The Blue Raiders rally would run dry in the second overtime with their only field goal in the period coming from an Upshaw dunk.
Upshaw would foul out in the second overtime, ending the night with a double-double with 13 points and a career-high 13 rebounds.
MT dominated the glass, out-rebounding the Owls 46-25, but the Blue Raiders had 22 turnovers to Rice's eight in the game.
Raymond closed the night with a season-high 16 points to lead the Blue Raiders, while Buford registered 15 points for his fourth double digit outing of the season.
