Blue Raiders Blank UT-Martin, 7-0
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee women's tennis marked another tally in the win column, defeating the Skyhawks of UT-Martin here Saturday afternoon.
It was a solid 7-0 shutout victory as the Blue Raiders played their first match of the year on campus at the Middle Tennessee Tennis Complex. They are now 3-0 this season when they are the home team.
The doubles point was clinched quickly by the Blue Raiders, with Giulia Squadrin and Jesse Grace defeating their opponents at the No. 3 spot, 6-1. Brittany Huxley and Nayara Moraes followed shortly after with a 6-3 win to put Middle Tennessee ahead 1-0.
Tiffany William and Darya Shulzhanok were trailing 3-4 when their match was called due to the doubles point already being decided.
Squadrin's day was not over after doubles, as she cruised to a 6-0, 6-2 win at No. 4 singles. The No. 5 singles match ended fairly quickly as well, as Huxley took a 6-0, 6-2 victory to make the score 3-0 in favor of MT.
William found her groove early in the second set to clinch the match for the Blue Raiders and win at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-2. Moraes battled some discomfort in the first set as well as a fierce, back-and-forth battle in the second, but prevailed for a 6-2, 7-5 win to improve to 7-0 on the season.
The battle at No. 2 singles was intense, but Shulzhanok proved she could handle the pressure, taking a 6-4, 7-6 (7-1) victory. Grace had the longest first set of the day, lasting longer than both Squadrin's and Huxley's matches, but made it look easy in the second to win it 7-6 (8-6), 6-2 to complete the sweep of the Skyhawks.
With their wins today, Moraes and Shulzhanok kept their undefeated singles records intact. Moraes is 7-0 individually, including one win at the No. 5 spot and the rest at No. 6. Shulzhanok has one win at No. 1 and five more at No. 2 to make her record 6-0.
The doubles team of Squadrin and Grace grabbed their second doubles win of the year, pushing their record to 2-0. Although they did not finish today, Shulzhanok and William are still 4-0 playing together this season.
