First Road Win Over Ranked Team Since 2005
BOCA RATON, Fla. – Middle Tennessee (12-8, 4-1 C-USA) scored two runs in the 11th to slide past No. 19 Florida Atlantic (20-4, 4-1 C-USA) by a final score of 5-3 Saturday night. The victory is the first road win for Middle Tennessee against a ranked team in 10 years, while also evening the series with the Owls at one game apiece. First pitch for Sunday's rubber match at FAU Baseball Stadium is scheduled for 11 a.m. CT.
"It was a good team win and something we really needed, to kind of tough it out and overcome some things because lately we haven't been able to do that," head coach Jim McGuire said. "But, tonight we did and it was a huge win for us. It still gives us an opportunity to win the series on the road tomorrow."
Austin Bryant doubled to lead off the 11th and scored the go-ahead run on a Dustin Delgado safety-squeeze bunt with one out. The hot-hitting Ronnie Jebavy stepped up with a big two-out single to give MT its final run.
Reliever Sam Alton picked up his third win in a clutch performance on the mound. Alton escaped a bases-loaded jam twice in the late innings.
With the score tied, Alton entered the seventh inning with the bases full and one away. He got the next two hitters out to escape the jam and ended up throwing 3.2 innings of scoreless relief to keep MT in the game. Alton also worked his way out of bases-loaded threat in the bottom of the ninth.
Alton recorded the win in MT's only other extra-inning game against New Orleans on Feb. 27.
"The effort that Sam gave us out of the (bull)pen won the game for us," McGuire said. "It was a very impressive outing for him. He's a strike-thrower when he comes in, and I thought he did a tremendous job against a very tough lineup."
Jebavy finished 2-for-6 with a double and two RBI and Bryant went 3-for-4 with two runs scored to lead MT. Jared Allen (2-for-6; RBI) and Michael Adkins (2-for-5) also recorded multi-hit efforts.
MT scored first with a pair of runs in the third and added another in the fourth. FAU responded with one in the third, fourth and sixth frames.
Starter Nate Hoffmann was effective, tossing 5.2 innings and giving up four hits and two earned runs. FAU's Brendon Sanger snapped Hoffmann's 12 inning scoreless earned-run streak with a solo home run in the third.
Closer Nathan Foriest recorded his fourth save after throwing a perfect frame in the final inning.
The Blue Raiders tallied 11 hits and 10 of those came with two outs. The Owls posted 10 hits. Each team committed three errors in the field.
