Blue Raiders Earn 20th Win
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee women's basketball team (20-8, 14-4 C-USA) concluded the regular season with a 73-60 victory over Florida Atlantic Saturday morning inside the Glass House.
With the win, MT reaches the 20-win plateau for the 12th straight season and finishes with an 11-3 mark in the Murphy Center.
At the conclusion of the weekend, MT will find out who it plays in the Conference USA Championships next week. The Blue Raiders receive a first-round bye and will play in the quarterfinals Thursday.
Four players reached double figures to lead MT as sophomore Olivia Jones led with a team-high 22 points and seven boards. Junior Brea Edwards finished with 14 points and a career-high 14 rebounds for her second double-double of the season, while sophomore Ty Petty added 12 points (nine in the second half).
Senior Shanice Cason showcased an all-around effort with 13 points, seven rebounds and dished out a team-best six assists. It was the guard's final home game as she and fellow junior Mackenzie Sells were honored for their dedication and commitment to the women's basketball program.
Junior Forward TiAnna Porter chipped in with four points, seven rebounds and three blocks in a career-high 20 minutes of action. Porter played a pivotal role in the second half as she came through with hustle plays on both ends of the floor that helped MT come through with the victory.
FAU (13-16, 7-11) came out of the gate on an 8-2 spurt in the first 2:29 of the contest. MT responded with a run of its own as an 8-0 run capped off by a Petty 3-pointer gave the Blue Raiders their first lead of the game,10-8.
The Owls retook the lead once again and stayed on top of the Raiders until Cason converted a free throw that tied the game 25-all. But a 9-0 run gave the Owls enough separation to go into halftime with a 34-30 lead. A trifecta by Cason followed by a Jones layup trimmed the deficit before the break while trailing, 34-25.
Despite shooting a better percentage than FAU, MT committed 11 first-half turnovers that led to 19 points for the Owls.
After FAU hit a trey coming out of the second stanza to go ahead, 37-30, MT came back to tie the game, 44-44. From that point on, MT took control of the game outscoring FAU 29-16 the rest of the way, including a late 13-0 run over a span of 3:10 that gave the Blue Raiders a commanding 69-52 lead with 3:42 left in the contest.
MT held FAU scoreless for 4:09 during the run while at one point the Blue Raiders connected on five straight shots. Porter played a key role during the run as she swatted an FAU shot attempt on defense before finding Petty on a fastbreak layup that forced the Owls to call a timeout.
FAU couldn't get back in the game as MT led by double digits the rest of the way en route to the 13-point victory.
The Blue Raiders turned the ball over just four times in the second stanza while holding FAU to 8-for-24 shooting from the field. MT shot 45 percent from the field and outrebounded the Owls, 28-15, in the second half after FAU held the rebounding edge in the first half.
MT will await who it plays in the Conference USA Championships next week. The Blue Raiders will have an automatic bye in the first round as the tournament starts on Wednesday.
