MT takes series over LA Tech
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee used timely hitting and superb pitching to secure a 3-2 win in the rubber game of a three-game series with visiting Louisiana Tech in front of 475 at Reese Smith Jr., Field Sunday.
The bottom of the order produced five of Middle Tennessee's seven hits and accounted for all of the run. Designated hitter Kaleb King was 3-for-3 with a home run, one RBI and two runs scored, batting eighth, and first baseman Kevin Dupree was 2-for-3 with a run scored in the nine hole.
Brad Jarreau and Jared Allen also had base hits. Jarreau extended his hitting streak to eight with a second-inning single, and his groundout in the third also produced a run.
Middle Tennessee pitching was also strong, particularly the bullpen. Starter Tyler Troutt went four-plus innings, scattered four hits and allowed one run as he picked up the no decision. Relief pitchers Blake Stansberry and Kooper Kessler combined to scatter four hits in five innings of work. They allowed one run, struck out five and walked one.
Stansberry (3-0) was credited with the win after providing two innings of two-hit, shutout relief. Kessler earned his fourth save with three innings of two hit relief.
Middle Tennessee (19-16, 11-4 C-USA) remained tied with Florida Atlantic for first in C-USA by winning the series.
King broke a scoreless tie in the bottom of the third when he drove a one-out fastball over the fence in centerfield for his second home run of the season. It staked Middle Tennessee to a 1-0 lead. Dupree and Jarreau followed with back-to-back hits and advanced to second and third, respectively, on a wild pitch. Dustin Delgado's ground out to shortstop enabled Dupree to score and stake the Blue Raiders to a 2-0 lead.
Troutt did a masterful job of avoiding potential danger in the top of the fourth. Taylor Nichols started the frame with a triple but was erased when he tried to score from third after a pitch had got away from catcher Michael Adkins. The Blue Raider catcher quickly pounced on the ball and made a perfect throw to Troutt to get the out at the plate. One pitch later, Brent Diaz walked but Troutt engineered a 1-6-3 double play when he snagged a shot back up the middle to end the inning and preserve the 2-0 lead.
Stansberry inherited a tough situation when he came on with runners on second and third and none out in the top of the fifth. The freshman from Knoxville showed great poise as he managed to escape the jam allowing just one run to score as the Blue Raiders maintained their slim advantage, 2-1, after the top of the fifth.
The bottom of Middle Tennessee's order continued to deliver in the bottom of the fifth. King and Dupree put together back-to-back, one-out hits to put runners at first and third. Jarreau hit a grounder to short, allowing King to score, as Middle Tennessee got the run back and carried a 3-1 edge after five innings.
The Bulldogs picked up one run in the top of the seventh to pull to within 3-2, and they had the tying run on second with one out in the eighth but Keesler came up huge with back-to-back strikeouts to end the inning and hold LA Tech at bay.
Middle Tennessee will play host to Tennessee at Reese Smith Jr., Field Tuesday at 6 p.m.
