Bullpen huge as Blue Raiders win third straight
The Blue Raiders (20-16) entered the game winless in eight games against midweek foes before finally breaking through against the Volunteers (15-17).
Middle Tennessee won its third straight game overall and built momentum as it heads to Charlotte for a key three-game C-USA series this weekend.
Sam Alton (4-1) and Blake Stansberry were outstanding in relief. They duo combined for six innings of no-hit relief. They each inherited bases-loaded, no out situations and escaped allowing three runs, one earned and prevented what could have been disastrous situations.
Alton was outstanding in his longest outing of the season. The junior righty provided four innings of no-hit relief and struck out two to give the Blue Raiders a chance to secure their first mid-week victory of the 2015 campaign.
Kevin Dupree led Middle Tennessee's nine-hit attack with a 3-for-4 effort that included a double and one run scored. Brad Jarreau, Ronnie Jebavy, Jake Ingold, Austin Bryant, Kaleb King and Michael Adkins also had hits for the Blue Raiders in the victory.
Tennessee struck first when Andrew Lee belted a two-run home run in the top of the first but the lead was short lived.
Middle Tennessee answered in the bottom of the third when the first three Blue Raiders reached to start the frame. Kevin Dupree and Brad Jarreau had back-to-back singles to start the inning and Dustin Delgado walked to load the bases with none out.
Ronnie Jebavy grounded into a fielder's choice, allowing Dupree to score the Blue Raiders' first run. Jebavy stole second to put two runners in scoring position for Jake Ingold, who came through with a clutch two-out, two-run single when he drove a 2-2 offering back up the middle to put Middle Tennessee on top, 3-2.
Like Tennessee, Middle Tennessee's lead did not last long. The Volunteers came back with two runs in the top of the fourth, without the benefit of a hit, to take a 4-3 lead. Tennessee used two errors and two walks to regain the lead and chase starter Garrett Ring from the mound. Relief pitcher Sam Alton inherited a bases loaded, no out situation and nearly escaped the jam.
Alton held the Volunteers and Middle Tennessee finally broke through against Tennessee relief pitcher Hunter Martin in the bottom of the sixth. With one out, Michael Adkins walked and Dupree continued his solid game with a sharp single to right, putting runners at the corners. Jarreau delivered a sac fly to right to score Adkins from third with the tying run, 4-4.
Middle Tennessee took the lead for good in the bottom of the seventh.
Austin Bryant's one-out triple off of relief pitcher Peter Lendstrohm in the bottom of the seventh provided Middle Tennessee with a golden opportunity. Designated hitter Kaleb King followed with an opposite field single down the right-field line to score Bryant and stake the Blue Raiders to a 5-4 lead and knock Lendstrohm from the game in favor of Kyle Serrano.
Michael Adkins greeted Serrano with an opposite field single to put runners at first and third. One pitch later, King came in to score and Adkins moved to second on a passed ball, giving Middle Tennessee a 6-4 lead. The second wild pitch of the inning, with two outs, allowed Adkins to score a big insurance run and put the Blue Raiders ahead, 7-4.
Blue Raider relief ace Nathan Foriest came on in the eighth and was greeted rudely. The first three Vols to face him reached to load the bases. Middle Tennessee turned to its fourth pitcher of the night, freshman righty Blake Stansberry. It marked the second time a Blue Raider relief pitcher inherited a bases-loaded, no out situation.
Johnny Youngblood hit a sinking liner into shallow center but Ronnie Jebavy came up with another outstanding play when his diving catch in center field turned what could have been danger into a sac fly that pulled Tennessee to within 7-5. One batter later Stansberry coaxed a ground ball that ignited an inning-inning double play.
Stansberry earned his first career save with his two innings of perfect relief work.
