THE STORYLINE
CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Fresh off its first midweek win of the season, the first-place Middle Tennessee baseball squad is gearing up for a three-game league series at Charlotte over the weekend. It'll be the first trip to Robert and Mariam Hayes Stadium for the Blue Raiders, who are tied atop the C-USA standings after taking four of their five conference series so far.
Friday night's opener begins at 5 p.m. CT, while Saturday will now feature a doubleheader starting at noon CT due to rain in Sunday's forecast.
MT Head Coach Jim McGuire is one win shy of 300 for his head coaching career and the veteran skipper knows the Blue Raiders can't take the Niners lightly.
Middle Tennessee (20-16, 11-4 C-USA) has won three straight after putting a stop to a four-game skid last Saturday. MT took the final two games over LA Tech to clinch last weekend's series, then moved on to claim a huge momentum-building victory over in-state rival Tennessee in front of 2,100-plus fans at Reese Smith Jr. Field last Tuesday.
The key for the Blue Raiders will be their ability to score runs and their defensive execution. MT is 19-4 in games when it plates three or more and the Diamond Raiders entered the week tied for seventh nationally in double plays and outfield assists.
The outfielders also lead the charge at the plate with junior Ronnie Jebavy (.365, 3 HR, 23 RBI, 18 SB), sophomore Brad Jarreau (.333, 1 HR, 17 RBI) and senior Jared Allen (.281, 9 HR, 35 RBI). Sophomores Kevin Dupree (five hits in last seven at-bats) and Kaleb King (four hits in last seven at-bats) have been hot lately at the bottom of the order.
On the hill, senior ace LHP Johnathan Frebis is seeking to get back on track after suffering a loss in his previous two outings. With Friday's start, Frebis will become one shy of the MT all-time record for most starts in a career.
Junior RHP Nate Hoffmann has been the stopper in the rotation with an impressive 2.51 ERA, while junior LHP Tyler Troutt will try to record his first collegiate win in the series finale.
Charlotte (13-17, 7-11 C-USA) enters the series 3-4 in the month of April and 3-6 in home league games. Most recently Charlotte dropped a 5-1 contest to Winthrop during the week. Last weekend, the 49ers dropped their league series to Marshall after falling 8-6 in Sunday's rubber game.
The Niners are hitting .250 as a group, led by Brett Elwood (.318, 1 HR, 16 RBI) and Brett Netzer (.312, 17 RBI). Elwood has hit safely in four straight and posted four hits in Tuesday's loss.
Charlotte pitchers are struggling a bit with an ERA near 6.00, but ace LHP Sean Geoghegan has been solid with a 2.91 ERA to go 4-3 during his eight starts.
