MT remains atop C-USA standings
HOUSTON – Middle Tennessee fell behind early and could never put together a rally against Rice in a 10-0 setback in the final game of a three-game series here Sunday.
The Blue Raiders (17-13, 9-3) lost two-of-three in the series but maintained their lead in C-USA based on their pivotal win in Saturday's contest.
Rice (22-12, 11-4) jumped on Middle Tennessee starter Garrett Ring for three runs in the first and chased him in the second. Ring worked one-plus inning, allowed four hits, six runs, all earned, walked two and hit two.
While Ring did not have a quality start, the Blue Raider bullpen was outstanding. Nathan Foriest worked four innings, scattering four hits and allowing one run. Blake Stansberry worked two strong innings before giving up three runs in his third inning of work.
"We knew they had some good arms left coming into today's game and we needed to keep the game close to have a chance," Middle Tennessee Head Coach Jim McGuire said. "It's our first series loss in conference play and we have to learn from this. I was really pleased with (Foriest) and the relief effort he provided. I also thought Blake Stansberry pitched well. He gave us two strong innings."
The Blue Raiders managed just three hits. Jake Ingold, Brad Jarreau and Austin Norrell came up with the only base knocks. Two of the three hits were of the infield variety.
Charlie Warren and Ford Stainback led the Owls with two hits each.
Middle Tennessee will return to action when it plays host to Tennessee Tech Tuesday at 6 p.m.
