MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee put together a strong starting pitching effort, collected some timely hits but still found a way to lose in the midweek, dropping a 6-5 decision against Tennessee Tech at Reese Smith Jr., Field Tuesday.
Jared Allen led Middle Tennessee's nine-hit attack with a 3-for-4 effort that included a home run, two RBI and one run scored. Will Schnure (2-for-4, 3 runs scored) and Brad Jarreau (2-for-4, one run scored, one double) also had multi-hit games for the Blue Raiders.
Tyler Troutt got the start for Middle Tennessee (17-14) and turned in a superb outing. He left with the lead in the seventh but the bullpen couldn't protect the slim advantage. Relief pitcher Will Small also turned in a solid effort to keep his team in the game and give them a chance to come back. Small worked 2-1/3 innings, allowed two hits, no runs, one strikeout and no walks.
Troutt turned in a stellar pitching performance that was very much needed considering the low-scoring pitcher's duel that developed between the two longtime rivals. The junior southpaw had his best effort as a Blue Raider, establishing career highs for strikeouts and innings pitched.
Troutt pitched 6-1/3 innings, scattered three hits, struck out eight and walked two. He had great command and generally pitched ahead in the count. Troutt had very few problem spots but he was quite impressive in conquering the ones he did face.
Tennessee Tech (13-18) had two on with none out in the fourth but Troutt got a strikeout and then coaxed an inning-ending double play. The Golden Eagles had the potential tying run on third with one out in the sixth but Troutt came through with back-to-back strikeouts to extinguish the threat.
Middle Tennessee broke a scoreless deadlock when catcher Will Schnure reached on a two-out error to extend the bottom of the third. One pitcher later Dustin Delgado ripped a double into left field that scored a hustling Schnure all the way from first.
The Blue Raiders showcased sound hitting fundamentals to add a key run in the bottom of the sixth. Middle Tennessee hitters Schnure and Brad Jarreau both did a solid job hitting the ball to the opposite field to stake Middle Tennessee to a 2-0 lead.
Schnure started the inning with a leadoff single to right and moved to second on a perfectly executed bunt from Delgado. Jarreau continued to produce solid at-bats and drilled a 2-2 pitch over the first baseman's head into right field to score Schnure and stake the Blue Raiders to a 2-0 lead.
Troutt provided a pitching effort that put his team in position to earn its first midweek victory in seven tries; however, Tennessee Tech rallied for six runs off of two Blue Raider relievers after he exited with one out and one on in the top of the seventh.
Tech jumped on relief pitcher Heath Slatton for four runs, all earned, and they added another off of Kooper Kessler. One of the six runs was charged to Troutt, who took the no decision.
Middle Tennessee would not go quietly.
The Blue Raiders rallied for three in the bottom of the eighth to pull to within 6-5. Schnure continued his solid performance with a leadoff single and moved to third when Jarreau singled to right. Schnure scored on a balk to pull the Blue Raiders to within 6-3. With two outs, Allen delivered his team-leading eighth home run of the season, a two-run blast over the right field fence, to pull Middle Tennessee to within 6-5.
Middle Tennessee had the tying run at third with two outs in the bottom of the ninth but couldn't get the game tied. Jake Ingold opened the inning with a single, moved to second on Austin Bryant's sacrifice bunt and to third on Kevin Dupree's groundout. Schnure's swinging bunt almost got the job done; however, he was thrown out by a half-step to end the game.
The Blue Raiders will return to action when they travel to Clarksville to face Austin Peay Wednesday. First pitch is 6 p.m.
