Jarreau collects four hits; Allen homers
It was a wild midweek affair as the teams combined for 26 runs, 28 hits and seven errors. A total of 12 pitchers were used in the game that almost last four hours.
The Blue Raiders (17-15) collected 14 hits and had four players with multi-hit games. Sophomore Brad Jarreau continued his upward trend with a 4-for-5 performance that included two doubles, one RBI and three runs scored. It was Jarreau's second four-hit game of the season. He extended his hitting streak to five.
Ronnie Jebavy (2-for-5, two runs scored, two RBI), Jake Ingold (2-for-5) and Kevin Sullivan (2-for-5, one run scored) also turned in multi-hit games. Jared Allen also had a big night, belting his ninth home run of the season with a 1-for-3 effort that included four RBI and two runs scored. Dustin Delgado was 1-for-4 with three runs scored. Austin Norrell was 1-for-4 with three RBI and one run scored.
Middle Tennessee used seven pitchers in the game with none going more than two innings. Nathan Foriest and Tanner McDivitt were the only hurlers to not allow a run.
Middle Tennessee took the early lead and jumped on top 3-0 after its first three at-bats but it was short-lived.
Delgado started the game with a sharp single to center and moved to third on Jarreau's opposite-field double. Jebavy's groundout to second pushed Delgado plateward with the game's first run.
The Blue Raiders pushed the lead to 3-0 in the top of the third. Jarreau collected his second hit and Jebavy followed with a bunt single that was misplayed by the third baseman to allow Middle Tennessee runners to reach second and third with out. Jared Allen's groundout and Austin Norrell's sac fly plated both runs.
Austin Peay battled back to tie the game with three runs in the bottom of the third, chasing starter Blake Stansberry, who provided two shutout innings before the first four Governors reached against him to start the third.
On came relief pitcher Caleb Smith, who did a masterful job of getting out of the jam. Smith inherited a bases-loaded, no out, situation with two runs already across in the inning. Smith coaxed a double play ball and ended the inning with a strikeout. After three innings, the game was tied 3-3.
Austin Peay finally got to Smith in the bottom of the fifth when it sent nine hitters to the plate. Three Governors scored by the time the frame had ended as the home squad took a 6-3 advantage. They pushed it to 7-3 going to the seventh before the Blue Raiders came to life.
Middle Tennessee came off of the deck and exploded for six runs to take a 9-7 lead in the top of the seventh. The first seven hitters to bat in the inning reached with Kevin Sullivan, Delgado, Jarreau, Jebavy, Allen, Norrell and Bryant reaching. Jarreau's double drove in the first run of the inning. Jebavy, Norrell and Bryant also had run-producing hits in the frame.
In the wild weekend affair, Austin Peay came right back and regained the lead when it sent 11 batters to the plate in the bottom of the seventh with seven of them scoring. By the time the dust had settled, Austin Peay regained a 14-9 advantage.
Allen delivered his ninth home run of the season with two on and two out in the top of the eighth as the Blue Raiders closed to within 14-12. Sullivan and Jarreau also had base knocks in the inning.
The Blue Raiders got a runner aboard in the top of the ninth but couldn't complete the comeback.
Middle Tennessee will play host to Louisiana Tech in a three-game C-USA series this weekend.
