MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee dropped the opening game of a three-game series against Louisiana Tech, 7-3, at Reese Smith Field Friday night.
The Blue Raiders (17-16, 9-4) fell behind 5-0 and couldn't play their way out of the early hole they dug for themselves against the Bulldogs (16-15, 3-9).
Blue Raider starter Johnathan Frebis (4-4) went six innings and gave up five runs, two earned. Will Small followed and went two innings, allowing two runs, before being lifted due to an arm injury. Sam Alton finished up with a scoreless inning of work.
Tyler Clancy (5-3) earned the win for LA Tech. Clancy went seven innings and scattered eight hits. He allowed three runs, all earned.
Uncharacteristic errors also proved costly for the Blue Raiders. Middle Tennessee had not made an error in five games but it committed a season-high five against LA Tech. Those miscues led to three unearned runs.
An inability to hit with runners in scoring position plagued the Blue Raiders, who stranded seven runners in the first five innings and were playing from behind.
LA Tech scored two in the top of the first, added one in the fourth and two more in the fifth to put the Blue Raiders in catch-up mode from the outset.
Middle Tennessee had the bases loaded with one out in the bottom of the second when Austin Norrell doubled, Austin Bryant walked and Jake Ingold singled; however, Michael Adkins grounded into a double play to end the threat.
The Blue Raiders had another great scoring opportunity in the fourth when Ronnie Jebavy and Jared Allen had back-to-back singles to start the inning. After two consecutive strikeouts, Ingold walked to load the bases but Middle Tennessee couldn't come through with the clutch two-out hit.
The Blue Raiders had two on with one out in the fifth after Delgado and Brad Jarreau put together back-to-back hits to get to the middle of the order; however, Clancy coaxed ground ball outs off the bats of Jebavy and Allen to end that threat.
Middle Tennessee finally got on the board in the bottom of the sixth when Bryant connected for his third home run of the season. Bryant drilled a line drive against the wind to pull the Blue Raiders to within 5-1.
The Blue Raiders continued to use the longball in their comeback bid in the bottom of the seventh. Jebavy's third home run of the season chased home Jarreau, who had reached on a fielder's choice, to narrow the deficit to 5-3.
The Bulldogs added a big insurance run in the top of the eighth with a two-out double, followed by a clutch two-out single to push the edge to 6-3. They added another run with two outs in the ninth to go on top, 7-3.
Middle Tennessee will look to even the series when it faces LA Tech at Reese Smith Field Saturday at 4 p.m.
