MT evens series with Bulldogs
Middle Tennessee (18-16, 10-4) rallied for sixth in the bottom of the eighth to claim an 8-6 win and even the series. The Blue Raiders remained tied for first in C-USA.
Junior Nathan Hoffmann did what he has done all season as a starting pitcher. He gave his team a chance to win and by doing so the Blue Raiders were able to rally and even the series going into Sunday's rubber game. First pitch at Reese Smith Jr. Field is 1 p.m.
Hoffmann pitched 7-1/3 innings, striking out five, scattering five hits and allowing four runs, but only one earned. He set career highs for innings pitched and strikeouts in the no-decision. Blake Stansberry (2-0) earned the win with 2/3 innings of hitless relief work. In fact, Stansberry came on with one on and one out in the eighth and got out of the inning with one pitch that led to a double play.
Kooper Kessler notched his third win of the season with one-third inning of relief work.
Ronnie Jebavy continued to be a terror at the plate, going 3-for-4 with two doubles, one RBI and one run scored. The junior outfielder is hitting .481 against C-USA pitching this season. Jared Allen also had a multi-hit game as he went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Austin Bryant, Brad Jarreau, Dustin Delgado, Jake Ingold and Kaleb King also were instrumental in victory.
Middle Tennessee came back in extraordinary fashion with a pinch-hitter and freshman figuring prominently in the rally that saw the Blue Raiders strike for six runs in the bottom of the eighth to secure the comeback win. The Blue Raiders sent 11 batters to the plate in the game-changing frame.
Bryant started the uprising by stinging a double down the left field line. Pinch-hitter King legged out an infield hit with great hustle to put runners at first and second, bringing freshman Kevin Sullivan to the plate.
Sullivan laid down a perfectly executed bunt and ended up reaching on a throwing error by the pitcher. One run scored on the play and King motored to third as Middle Tennessee closed to within 4-3. With one out, Jarreau hit a shot to third and King was off and running on the contact play. King just beat the throw at the plate to even the score.
Sullivan later scored on a wild pitch to give the Blue Raiders a 5-4 advantage and their first lead of the series. Allen had a clutch single and Ingold's two-run base knock added what proved to be two huge insurance runs.
By the time the dust had settled, Middle Tennessee led 8-4 going into the ninth. The additional runs were clutch as the Bulldogs (16-16, 3-10) put together their own rally. They scored two and had the bases loaded when the game ended.
The Blue Raiders continued to hurt themselvesearly in the series against LA Tech. Three of the Bulldogs' first four runs were unearned as they took a 4-0 lead after 4-1/2 innings. After committing a season-high five errors Friday night, Middle Tennessee was guilty of four miscues in the first five innings Saturday.
Middle Tennessee got on the scoreboard with one run in the bottom of the fifth but it should have been able to do more damage. With one out, Brad Jarreau singled and moved to third when Delgado reached on an error in right field. Jebavy continued his strong season with a RBi double to left to drive Jarreau plateward and cut the Bulldogs' lead to 4-1.
The Blue Raiders still had two runners in scoring position with one out for the middle of the order, but Jared Allen struck out and Jake Ingold grounded out to end the threat.
The Blue Raiders put together another threat in the bottom of the seventh when they mounted a two-out rally. Delgado coaxed a two-out walk and Jebavy laced a single into right center to chase Bulldogs starter Phil Maton from the game.
Allen legged out an infield hit to extend the inning off of relief pitcher Adam Atkins. Delgado scored on the play to narrow the gap to 4-2 and put another runner in scoring position, but Ingold struck out to end the inning.
Junior lefty Tyler Troutt (0-2, 4.79) will get the start for Middle Tennessee Sunday.
