Blue Raiders sweep Toppers to remain in 1st
MURFREESBORO – Middle Tennessee won the first two games of its series against WKU in its final at-bat.
The Blue Raiders (28-20, 18-6) did not need such dramatics in the finale as they secured a 9-2 victory to complete the series sweep in front of 1,521 on Little League Day at Reese Smith Jr., Field.
Middle Tennessee won its fourth straight game and remained in first place in C-USA, one game ahead of both Florida Atlantic and Rice. The Blue Raiders improved to 11-1 at home against conference foes.
They capped one of the best hitting weekend series of the season with 12 hits against the Hilltoppers (23-23, 9-15). Middle Tennessee hitters had 12 hits in each of the three games. It marked the most hits in a conference weekend series this season and the 36 base knocks were the second most overall to the 39 the Blue Raiders collected in three games against Western Illinois. Middle Tennessee hit .326 with four doubles, one triple and two home runs in the series.
Brad Jarreau capped a strong weekend in which he hit .462 with a 3-for-4 performance that included two runs and one RBI. Ronnie Jebavy (2-for-4, 4 RBI), Austin Norrell (2-for-4, 2 runs) and Michael Adkins (2-for-3, 2 runs scored) also had multi-hit games.
Jake Ingold capped a remarkable week with a 1-for-3 effort that included a three-run home run to jumpstart the Blue Raiders in the bottom of the third. For the series, Ingold hit .600 with one double, two home runs and four RBI.
Unlike the first two games of the series, Middle Tennessee wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard much to the delight of the hundreds of Little Leaguers in attendance.
And it was the hottest of all Blue Raiders who ignited the offense.
Ingold belted his second home run of the series and sixth of the season in the bottom of the first. His three-run circuit with two outs scored Jarreau, who had singled to start the game, and Dustin Delgado to give the Blue Raiders an early 3-0 lead.
WKU got two of the runs back in the top of the second only to see the Blue Raiders answer with a two-spot in the bottom half of the frame. Norrell and Adkins started the inning with back-to-back singles and Jarreau chased Norrell plateward with the screaming double into the gap in right center. The first three hits in the inning were all of the opposite field variety. After Dustin Delgado walked to load the bases, Jebavy delivered a sac fly to right field, scoring Adkins to give the Blue Raiders a 5-2 advantage.
Starter Tyler Troutt (1-3) had his biggest spot in the top of the fourth. WKU was looking to get back into the game and had runners at first and second with none out. Troutt induced a double play and a strikeout to end the inning and hold the Hilltoppers at bay.
Troutt's magic continued in the fifth. WKU loaded the bases with no outs but there was a fly out to right and no advancement of the runners. The third double play in five innings helped Troutt get off of the hook with no runs scoring in the fifth. Troutt went five innings, scattered seven hits and allowed two runs, both earned, before turning the game over to the bullpen. The junior lefty earned his first career win on the mound.
The Blue Raider bullpen was strong once again going four innings, allowing one hits and no runs.
After going three innings without scoring, Middle Tennessee added to the lead with two runs in the bottom of the sixth. Jarreau's third hit of the weekend started the sixth and Delgado followed with a perfectly executed hit-and-run to put runners at first and second for Jebavy. The junior centerfielder drilled a base hit into left center to score Jarreau and give Middle Tennessee a 6-2 lead. Delgado would later score on an Austin Bryant groundout to stake the Blue Raiders to a 7-2 advantage.
Middle Tennessee continued one of its most productive offensive series of the season with two insurance runs for good measure in the bottom of the seventh. Norrell reached for the fourth consecutive plate appearance to open the bottom of the seventh. Adkins followed with a walk and both runners scored on Jebavy's two-run rip to center to provide a 9-2 lead.
The Blue Raiders will return to action when they travel to San Antonio to face UTSA next weekend.
