Presented Character Award Saturday
NASHVILLE – Former Middle Tennessee all-american Jason Millard was honored Saturday by the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame at the annual Champion Within Luncheon. The event was held at the Omni Nashville Hotel and celebrates the success of outstanding individuals who display great character and embody the belief that allows them to overcome any and all obstacles to become successful in life.
Millard was presented the prestigious Character Award. The former two-time all-american and current Web.com Tour player qualified for the 2014 US Open at Pinehurst then five days later he called a penalty on himself that he knew would get him disqualified.
"It's heartbreaking, but what I was feeling in my heart wasn't right," said Millard.
He still does not know if he committed the violation of grounding his club in a bunker, but he could not find peace until he called the United States Golf Association to declare his wrong doing.
Millard, a Murfreesboro native, was a three-time all-conference performer for the Blue Raiders. The former Riverdale High School standout was also the first Blue Raider to compete in four straight NCAA Regionals and two NCAA Championships.
Millard, who graduated with a degree in Liberal Studies in December 2011, competed in the World University Games in 2011.
As a senior, Millard led the Sun Belt Conference with a 70.8 scoring average while putting together 12 straight tournaments with at least one round in the 60s. Millard, who tied for fourth at the NCAA Regionals to advance as an individual to the NCAA Championships, set the school record with a round of 63 on his way to winning the Mobile Bay Intercollegiate.
