MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee volleyball team (0-1) fell in the season opener to Cleveland State, 3-0, Saturday morning in Alumni Memorial Gym.
The Blue Raiders were led by senior Chelsea Ross as she posted a game-high 17 kills and a .364 hitting clip. Ross is now three kills away from 1,400 for her career. Sophomore Brianna Pannone led the squad with a game-high 14 assists and freshman Delaney Taylor right behind with 12 helpers.Sophomore Libero Jacqueline Lux notched a team-best seven digs.
MT got off to a slow start in the opening frame with the Vikings (1-0) leading 8-3 early on and would continue to lead for the rest of the set.
The Blue Raiders would close the gap to three, 17-14, followed by a CSU service error. However, the Vikings outscored the Raiders, 8-2 the rest of the way to win set one, 25-17. CSU would hit .444 during the first game that keyed to the 1-0 lead.
It was MT's turn in the second set to get off to a fast start as an 8-2 run while tied 2-2 gave the Blue Raiders a 10-4 lead. Junior Miri Shade and freshman LaVondria Covington played a pivotal role in the run as both came away with consecutive double blocks before Taylor capping off the spurt with an ace.
Continuing to lead in the second frame, the Blue Raiders went up by as much as six, 18-12, thanks to Pannone's set up to Covington for the kill. But the Vikings stormed back with a 8-2 spurt of their own to come back to tie the set, 20-all. CSU kept the momentum scoring five of the next eight points to win the second set, 25-23, and go into intermission with a 2-0 lead.
Much like the first set, CSU started quickly while MT couldn't get anything going. The Vikings ran out to an 8-4 advantage. Following a kill from freshman Elise Watford that cut the deficit to two, 12-10, the Vikings pushed the lead to seven, 20-13, before eventually taking the final set and the match.
For the contest, the Vikings hit .314 opposed to the Blue Raiders' .135 attacking clip, and also held an 11-6 blocking advantage.
Six freshmen made their debut with Makila York recording five kills, while Delaney Gallagher, Ashton Peck, Watford, Taylor and Covington all playing in their first collegiate contest.
The Blue Raiders will look to even the day at 1-1against Bowling Green at approximately 5:30 inside AMG. Middle Tennessee defeated BG last season in five sets on the Falcons' home court.
