MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – A balanced performance led the Middle Tennessee volleyball team to bounce back in the second match of the day with a 3-0 win over Bowling Green Saturday evening at AMG.
It's the second straight season the Blue Raiders picked up their first win over the Falcons, but this time it didn't take the full five sets to pick up the win.
"I really loved our energy level in the second match," said Head Coach Matt Peck. "Delaney Gallagher and Rachel Shaughnessy both came up big offensively and defensively."
Senior Chelsea Ross led MT with 12 kills, giving the Murfreesboro native 1,409 career kills to make her just one of three players in program history to accomplish the feat.
Five different players would record at least five kills with senior Rachel Shaughnessy tallying seven, freshmen Elise Watford and Delaney Gallagher both with six and junior Miri Shade firing in five to round out the leaders.
"I thought both of our setters also did a great job running our offense," stated Peck."We played a very good match this evening and it was a total team effort."
In just her second match, freshman Delaney Taylor picked up a game-high 20 assists while sophomore Brianna Pannone turned in 16 helpers as well. Sophomore Jacqueline Lux paced the Blue Raiders with 13 digs.
It was the way head coach Matt Peck wanted his team to bounce back after an early morning loss to Cleveland State. MT improved its hitting percentage by 63 points (.135-.198) from the first contest and out blocked the Falcons, 10-7.
MT led from start to finish in the first set while eventually pushing the lead to as much as eight, 17-9, after Taylor found Shade for a kill. BG wouldn't go away as a 7-2 run closed the gap to three, 19-16.
The Blue Raiders then regained momentum outscoring the Falcons, 6-4, after Shaughnessy ended the set with a kill to give MT a 1-0 lead.
Set two would go back and forth early in the frame before Bowling Green taking an 11-6 advantage. However, the Blue Raiders scored eight of the next points to tie the set at 14-all.
MT then took the lead with a 6-1 run thanks to Bowling Green miscues, giving the Blue Raiders a 20-15 lead. The Falcons would come back to tie the set, 21-21,before Middle Tennessee ended the frame with a tight 25-23 win. Watford and Ross contributed with kills before Gallagher picking up a block to give MT a 2-0 lead going into the break.
Frame three was just as close with seven ties and seven lead changes. MT finally broke away from BG with a 4-0 run while trailing 16-15 to capture a three-point lead, 19-16, after combined blocks from Gallagher and Ross and a solo block from Watford capped off the spurt. The Blue Raiders never trailed the rest of the way en route to the 25-20 set three win after a BG set error, pushing MT to the sweep and its first win of the season.
Middle Tennessee will look to keep the ball rolling tomorrow at 12:00 p.m. against Big Ten foe Indiana at AMG.
