Taylor Tallies 26 Assists
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee volleyball team (1-2) put forth an excellent effort against Indiana (2-1) Saturday afternoon but fell short in a thrilling five-set match, 3-2.
Senior Chelsea Ross notched a game-high 24 kills with a solid hitting clip of .321, while Junior Miri Shade performed exceptionally well with career highs in kills (13) and digs (13) for her first career double-double.
Freshman Delaney Taylor posted a team-high 26 assists, eclipsing her season-high from yesterday, while sophomore Brianna Pannone tallied 23 helpers. The two setters combined for 49 of the team's 58 assists. Pannone also tied her career high with nine digs.
Freshman Makila York got in the mix, hitting a team-high .467 (8-1-15) while senior Rachel Shaughnessy chipped in with eight kills as well. Sophomore Jacqueline Lux tallied a team-high 17 digs and a career-best seven assists.
For the third straight game, the Blue Raiders improved their hitting percentage to .245.
With the fifth set tied 3-3, an Indiana service error and a kill from Chelsea Ross gave the Blue Raiders a 5-3 lead with some momentum. However, the Hoosiers strung together a 6-0 run that gave the Big Ten foes a 9-5 lead.
IU would remain in the lead for the rest of the way, but the Blue Raiders didn't give up as a 4-0 spurt thanks to two kills by Ross, an attack error and a combined block from Shaughnessy and freshman Elise Watford put MT within a point, 14-13, from extending the match. MT's effort fell just short in the ensuing rally with the Hoosiers scoring on the next rally to claim the set and the win.
Indiana started fast out of the gate in the first set going ahead, 12-6, and despite IU holding a lead for majority of the frame, the Blue Raiders climbed back from a five-point deficit on three separate occasions.
Trailing IU 24-21, a Shaughnessy kill followed by a Delaney Taylor service ace closed the gap to one, 24-23, before IU won the first game, 25-23.
Game two stayed close early as neither team led by more than two points while MT later took a 13-9 lead thanks to an IU service error. MT extended the lead to five, 22-17 after Pannone found Shaughnessy for a kill before the Blue Raiders claimed the set to tie the match, 1-1.
Frame three both teams didn't budge as the lead wouldn't go above four with MT holding a 20-16 lead. Indiana went on to outscore MT, 8-4, to tie the set and force the contest to go past 25. It didn't take long for MT as two straight points as an Indiana attack error and a kill from Shaughnessy put the Blue Raiders in front, 2-1.
IU took control in the fourth set, outhitting the Blue Raiders .462/-.032 en route to forcing a fifth set with the 25-16 win. The Hoosiers set the tone early on with a 9-4 lead, and eventually going up by as much as eight, 22-14, before capturing the set.
After hitting .450 (57-12-100) in the first three sets and taking a 2-1 lead, MT hit just .054 over the last two frames.
MT will look to finish the weekend at 2-2 on Sunday against Notre Dame. The Blue Raiders and Fighting Irish last squared off in the 2015 Blue Raider Bash with MT notching the win, 3-1.
