MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Middle Tennessee volleyball team (1-3) won the first set but was dealt a 3-1 setback to Notre Dame (1-2) Sunday afternoon at AMG in the Blue Raider Bash finale.
Senior Chelsea Ross posted a game-high 21 kills with nine digs. Her performance over the weekend landed her on the All-Tournament team, recording 74 kills (4.93/set) with a .250 hitting clip and 28 digs.
Sophomore Brianna Pannone posted 21 assists with freshman Delaney Taylor notching 18 helpers. The two led the offense with 150 combined assists, equaling 85.2 percent of the team's output. Libero Jacqueline Lux notched her season-best of 25 digs, just two off her career-high. The sophomore notched 62 digs over the weekend.
Junior Miri Shade posted another double-digit match with 12 kills and chipped in with seven digs. Three players in Freshman Delaney Gallagher (.346), senior Rachel Shaughnessy (.255) and Ross all hit over .250 this weekend. Shaughnessy led the squad with 17 total blocks and freshman Elise Watford picking up 12 swats.
The Blue Raiders got off to a quick start in the first set, pushing to a 7-3 lead after Pannone found Ross for a kill, but the Irish answered with a 6-0 run that put Notre Dame in front, 9-7.
From that point on, both teams went back and forth until MT took control of the frame outscoring ND 9-3 to go ahead by six, 22-16, thanks in part to five combined kills from Ross, Shade and Shaughnessy. The Blue Raiders would go on to pick up the first set, 25-18, after another kill from Shaughnessy, giving MT the 1-0 lead.
The Irish jumped out to a 4-1 advantage before the Blue Raiders scored seven of the next 11 points to tie the set, 8-8, after a kill from Ross. However, that would be the closest MT would get with the Irish going on an 11-4 run to go ahead by seven, 19-12, before eventually sealing the second frame and tying the match going into the break.
Much like the second set, Notre Dame had a strong start with a 6-3 lead. The contest would go back and forth as the match went on with MT taking a 16-15 advantage following a kill from freshman Delaney Gallagher that was set up by Pannone.
The lead was the last for MT as ND tied the match and went on a 3-0 spurt to take a 19-16 lead. Middle Tennessee cut the deficit to one on two separate occasions but couldn't get over the hump with the Irish taking the frame, 25-21, and a 2-1 lead.
Like the previous match against Indiana, MT showed fight when the chips were down. With ND leading 9-6 in the set, the Blue Raiders scored three straight points thanks to a service error and consecutive kills from Shade. What looked like some momentum was gaining for MT, the Irish stopped it with a 6-1 run to go in front, 15-10.
Notre Dame kept the foot on the pedal with a 20-15 lead before a 4-1 spurt cut the deficit to one, 21-20. Ross and York led the charge with three kills along with an ND attack error. The Irish never let MT get any closer piecing a 5-1 run to close the set and the match.
MT will head on the road for the first time this season with a trip to Logan, Utah for the Utah State Invitational. The Blue Raiders will square off against host Utah State, San Francisco and Southern Utah.
