Blue Raiders fought hard, but lose another one in three
MURFREESBORO – Middle Tennessee (1-7) fought hard for the first two sets, but in the end the VCU Rams (3-6) were just too much as they beat the Blue Raiders 3-0 at Alumni Memorial Gym Saturday.
MT once again scored 20 points in two of the three sets, but were stymied once they were in range to take control.
Chelsea Ross led the team in kills with nine, but close behind her were Miri Shade and Makila York who each had seven kills. Brianna Pannone was great leading to the Blue Raider offense as she picked up 23 assists to lead the team, and Jacqueline Lux was the best defender with nine digs.
The first set was back and forth as it was tied 11 times and changed leads three times. MT started things as they went out to an early 2-0 lead. VCU came back to tie it 2-2 and the frame remained tight until mid-way through until the Rams put together a 7-3 run to take a 15-11 lead. The Blue Raiders weren't done as they battled back to tie the set 18-18 with a kill from LaVondria Covington. However, from there VCU was able to put together another 7-2 run to take the first set 25-20.
Set began much the same way as set one, but an 8-0 run by the Rams saw the score balloon from 5-5 to 13-5 in favor of VCU. Middle Tennessee show more resilience as after the Rams took an 18-10 lead, the Raiders went on a 9-3 run of their own to close the set to two at 21-19. VCU took control once again, however as they closed out the frame, taking it 25-21 for a 2-0 match lead.
Both teams were ready to go once again when the third set got under way. Middle Tennessee looked like they were going to get back into the match as they were down just one at 11-10. But the Rams caught fire, finishing the set on a 14-5 run to close out the frame 25-15 and take the match 3-0.
The Blue Raiders will be in action again Saturday evening when they take on the K-State Wildcats (7-1) at 7pm. K-State has already played two matches in the Middle Tennessee Invitational and has won both, only losing one set.
