MT fights hard in setback
LOGAN, Utah – Middle Tennessee (1-6) battled hard but ended up losing 3-0 to Southern Utah (6-1) in the final match for both teams in the 2015 Gossner Invitational at Utah State in Logan.
The Blue Raiders fought valiantly with a team that was 5-1 coming into the match. Chelsea Ross led all scorers with 18 kills and Miri Shade broke out of slump with 12 of her own, second most of the match.
Middle Tennessee ended up with more total kills in the match than Southern Utah, 47-41, and hit their best of the tournament at .243. In the end they were just a couple steps behind the Thunderbirds.
Southern Utah took an early 4-1 lead to begin the first set, but MT battled back and the teams traded the lead for the remainder of the frame. Chelsea Ross led the 7 kills in the set and the Raiders were the first team to the 20 point mark. But the Thunderbirds put together a nice rally and took the first set 25-23.
The second stanza was a seesaw battle as both teams traded the lead six times. MT looked to be in control with 16-13 lead midway through the set, but a quick 4-0 run by the Thunderbirds saw them retake the lead 17-16. The Raiders battled back, again going ahead 20-18. But once again the lead was short lived as Southern Utah finished the set on a 7-2 run to win 25-22 and earn a commanding 2-0 set lead.
Middle Tennessee scored first in the third set and led 1-0, 2-1 and 3-2, but when the Thunderbirds took the lead 4-3 they never trailed again. The Blue Raiders held tough as Southern Utah didn't lead by more than four until late in the set. The Thunderbirds finished off MT 25-18 in final set to finish off the sweep.
MT will travel home Sunday and prepare to host their second tournament in three weeks. The Middle Tennessee Invitational begins Saturday as the Blue Raiders will host VCU at 12:30pm and K-State at 7:30pm.
