Brianna Jasenak scored her first goal of the season in the 70'
BATON ROUGE, La. – A goal from Brianna Jasenak in the 70' proved to be the difference as the Middle Tennessee soccer team defeated Ball State, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon in the teams' final match of the Stomp in the Swamp.
"Ball State was a strong physical team that that challenged us today," head coach Aston Rhoden said. "I was pleased that our team was able to bounce back from yesterday's loss to put up a shutout and get the win."
For Jasenak, her first goal of the season was a header that came off of a perfectly served corner kick from fellow senior Tori Hawkins. The assist from Hawkins was MT's first helper in 2015.
Like most of the season, the Blue Raiders (4-1-0) were far better in the second half than the first.
MT had seven shots in the final 45 minutes compared to only three in the first. The squad also only allowed Ball State (3-2-1) to craft three scoring chances during the entire second period.
The Blue Raiders were tested early in the game with five Ball State shot attempts during the first 14 minutes, but MT goalkeeper Kelsey Brouwer was able to fend them all off.
Brouwer finished the match with a pair of saves and tallied her fourth shutout of the young season.
Offensively, MT was efficient with its chances as 50 percent (5-of-10) of the team's shots were on target. The unit also held the advantage in corner kicks, six to four.
Ball State was aggressive on offense, but the Blue Raider defense held its line throughout the day and forced five offside penalties.
Seven Blue Raiders attempted shots in the game including Courteney Gibson who paced her club with three. Jasenak also chipped in with a pair of strikes including the game-winner.
Brouwer, Courteney Gibson and Grace Stewart were named to the Stomp in the Swamp All-Tournament Team by leading MT to a 1-1 record over the weekend.
The Blue Raiders will return to Murfreesboro, Tenn. to host Lipscomb on Sept. 10. Kickoff for the home matchup is scheduled for 7 p.m.
