MT wins third straight in conference play
CHARLOTTE – A career night from Giddy Potts fueled Middle Tennessee in a thriller on Thursday at Charlotte but it was a clutch three by Darnell Harris and a clutch free throw by Reggie Upshaw that sealed the 73-72 win down the stretch.
Potts led the Blue Raiders with a career-high 29 points on 9-11 shooting and 7-8 from three while grabbing five boards. Potts' seven three-pointers was also a season best for the sophomore.
Harris added 12 points while Upshaw totaled seven points and 13 rebounds.
Middle Tennessee (11-5, 3-1) had to fight all night against the 49ers (4-12, 1-3), but 47.5 percent shooting and 56.3 percent from three combined with a 42-28 advantage on the glass helped put the Raiders over the top.
Potts got it going early, scoring nine straight points for the Raiders to make the score 15-13 in favor of the 49ers.
Karl Gamble followed that up a few minutes later with five consecutive points for the Blue Raiders, giving the freshman a career high in points at the half.
Gamble's second basket ignited an 8-0 run by the Blue Raiders to put them up by five, but Charlotte closed the gap as the game went into halftime with MT leading 37-36.
It was more of the same in the second half as it remained a close game throughout. Potts went on another run in the second half, scoring seven straight for the Blue Raiders to make it 58-56 with the 49ers on top.
Potts remained the story of the game for the Raiders as the clock wound down, reaching his career high in scoring with 2:05 remaining in the contest.
A clutch three by Harris put MT in front 72-71 before Charlotte tied it back up with a free throw. With 3.8 seconds remaining Upshaw hit one of two free throws to seal the win for the Raiders.
