IRVING, Texas – After Middle Tennessee recieved three Conference USA honors in the opening week of the C-USA track & field weekly honors, Eliud Rutto has been recognized as the Conference USA Male Track Co-Athlete of the Week.
Rutto competed in the 800 meter and the 4x400-meter relay at the Commodore Invitational, racing in the 800 meter for the first time this season. Rutto last ran the 800 at the 2014 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, where he placed fifth, earning first-team All-American honors.
The Eldoret, Kenya native won the 800 meter in 1:49.12 and ranks second in the NCAA and first in Conference USA.
"He is talented and has worked hard," said head coach Dean Hayes. "He is making his comeback. We are really happy with the progress that he is making and he needs a little more speed work. This week he will run the 400 meter down at Birmingham."
Rutto also helped the 4x400-meter relay team of Chaz Simmons, Greg Cantrell and Ifiok Umoh finish sixth in 3:20.06. Their time also ranks as the sixth fastest in C-USA.
"Next week he has an invitation to go run on the JDL Fast Track in Winston Salem, North Carolina, which is where he ran well in 2014," said Hayes.
Middle Tennessee and Rutto continue competition Jan. 24 at the Emory Crossplex Invitational in Birmingham, Alabama.
