Women’s tennis drops two road matches
DALLAS – Middle Tennessee's women's tennis program went out on the road to face stiff competition for the second consecutive week and competed very well, but was unable to come up with a win.
A trip to Fort Worth to play the No. 22 ranked TCU Horned Frogs started the weekend off on Friday morning. The Blue Raiders were competitive in almost every set, but freshman Costanza Magazzini delivered the only winning set for MT.
TCU took the doubles point by winning 6-1 at No. 1 and a close 6-4 win at No. 2. Magazzini and partner Alory Pereira had their match halted at 4-4.
There was only one set in the entire match against the Horned Frogs that the Blue Raiders were shut out. Sarah Sediri was right in the mix in her match at No. 4, but dropped the first set 7-5. Pereira, a newcomer to the Blue Raiders squad, forced a first set tiebreak at the No. 5 spot in her first action of the year, but was unable to capitalize on the opportunity.
Magazzini took her first set in a tiebreak at No. 6, but had to retire in the second set, down five games to none. The Horned Frogs were able to complete the 7-0 shutout of the Blue Raiders.
A Saturday morning match vs. McNeese State gave MT an opportunity to get back to .500 on the season.
The Blue Raiders got off to a good start by winning the doubles point, thanks to Brittany Huxley and Giulia Squadrin's 6-2 win in dominating fashion at No. 1. Magazzini and Pereira followed that up with a 7-5 win at No. 3.
Although Huxley and Squadrin blew by their opponents in doubles action, both were forced to win their singles matches in a third set, which they were able to do.
At No. 2, Huxley took a first set win in a tiebreak, but was defeated 6-3 in her second set. When it came down to a third set match-tiebreak, she showed her ability to compete for a long period of time, winning the match-tiebreak 13-11.
Squadrin was locked in a tight battle from the beginning at the No. 4 singles spot. After taking the first set 6-3, she lost the second set by a close margin, 7-5. In the third set, she took control late in the match to win it in a third set tiebreak, making her score 6-3, 5-7, 7-6.
The 2-4 Blue Raiders now return home for a match against Chattanooga at 3 p.m. on Feb. 4 at the Adams Tennis Complex. There is free admission to every match, and there will be free food at the match against the Mocs, while supplies last.
