MT returns to action at Tennessee State Wednesday
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. — Middle Tennessee put forth a strong effort Sunday afternoon in AMG, but fell to C-USA rival WKU 3-0.
Regan Coughlin paced the Blue Raiders with nine kills and tied for a team-best six digs. Bailey Mason and Dora Peonia each added six kills, while Jacqueline Lux tallied 21 assists and six digs.
The Raiders (4-13, 1-3) and Toppers (16-2, 4-0) traded points to begin the opening set until WKU took control with an 8-3 lead. The Topper lead would grow to 22-14 when MT began a rally. A kill by Coughlin and a trio of kills by Peonia trimmed the deficit to 23-18. WKU would answer with kills by Taylor Dellinger and Sydney Engle to take the first set 25-18. Both squads hit their best in the opening set, as MT hit at a .318 clip and WKU posted a .577 attack percentage.
Much like the opening frame, MT and WKU split the first six points of the second set before WKU opened an 8-3 advantage. The Hilltoppers relied on their defense for the remainder of the frame, as WKU forced eight MT errors. The WKU lead would grow to 14-9, and set runs of 8-1 and 5-0 helped WKU to a 25-14 win.
The Blue Raiders responded out of intermission and struck first in the third set. An ace by Mason and back-to-back kills by Makila York put the Raiders ahead 5-2. The Hilltoppers answered with a 4-0 run to take a 6-5 lead. From there, MT answered every WKU point, not letting the Toppers lead by more than two. With a 10-8 lead, WKU began to surge and used an 8-1 run to build an 18-9 advantage. The Hilltoppers used the offensive momentum down the stretch to close the set 25-14 and sweep the match.
WKU hit for a .500 attack percentage and was led by Alyssa Cavanaugh with 15 kills, while Georgia O'Connell tallied 11 digs. Sydney Engle also served five aces to keep the MT offense out of rhythm.
The Blue Raiders return to action Wednesday in Nashville as they take on the Tennessee State Tigers. Following the midweek matchup, Middle Tennessee will take their second C-USA road trip of the season as it travels to LA Tech and FIU next weekend.
