MT returns to league play Friday against LA Tech
NASHVILLE, Tenn. — Despite a valiant Blue Raider rally late in the match, former Ohio Valley Conference foe Tennessee State bested Middle Tennessee Wednesday night, 3-1, in Nashville.
Junior Jacqueline Lux helped spark the Blue Raider offense with a career-high 46 assists to go along with a pair of kills and an ace.
Three Blue Raiders (4-14, 1-3) tallied double-digit kills, led by Regan Coughlin who collected 15. Aubrie Huddleston and Dora Peonia also added 13 and 11 kills, respectively.
Nashville-native Delaney Gallagher led the defensive stance with six total blocks and added three kills and an ace, while Meg Irvin logged a match-high 20 digs. Vonnie Covington also provided a balanced outing with eight kills and a pair of blocks.
The Raiders and Tigers swapped the opening-frame's first eight points before Tennessee State (10-9, 2-2) jumped ahead 8-5. The Tigers extended the lead to 18-12 before MT began its first rally of the night. Behind kills from Huddleston and Coughlin, MT trimmed the deficit to 20-18 and knotted the match at 22-22. Tennessee State answered with a run of its own. The Tigers used timely offense to regain control and take three of the final four set points to win 25-23.
Using the opening-set momentum, Tennessee State jumped ahead in the second set 7-5. The Tigers took advantage of six MT attack errors and silenced every Raider run. The Blue Raiders would close the deficit to 18-16, but a 7-5 TSU run gave the Tigers the second-set win 25-21.
In search of the sweep, Tennessee State jumped out to a 10-5 lead after intermission. Seeking for an answer, the Blue Raiders relied on their defense down the stretch of the set to trim the TSU lead. Trailing 15-11, the Raiders cut the deficit to 16-14 when a block and an ace by Coughlin followed by a timely block from Peonia tied the match 19-19. Tied 20-20, a kill by Huddleston sparked a 5-1 run highlighted by a pair of Gallagher blocks to help MT close the set 25-21 and get on the board.
The Blue Raiders tallied five total blocks on the defensive stance in the third set.
The Tigers silenced the Blue Raider momentum to open the final frame. TSU found an offensive rhythm to claim a 5-3 early lead and didn't look back. MT offered a mid-set rally with an ace from Lux and kill from Peonia to cut the TSU lead to 10-9, but the Tigers used a 10-0 run en route to a 25-15 set win.
Arijana Anderson led the Tigers with 14 kills, including eight in the final two sets. TSU also served up six service aces and took advantage of 15 Blue Raider service errors throughout the match.
The Blue Raiders return to conference play beginning Friday at LA Tech before closing the weekend in Boca Raton, Fla. against FAU Sunday.
