Tipoff set for 6 PM
CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Middle Tennessee will tip off the 2016-17 campaign against the first of three ACC foes on its non-conference schedule when it faces Virginia Friday at 6 p.m.
The game will be broadcast on WMOT 89.5-FM with the Voice of the Lady Raiders, Dick Palmer, on the call.
Middle Tennessee returns four starters and eight letterwinners from its 2015-16 C-USA Championship squad, but veteran Head Coach Rick Insell knows his team will be in for quite a challenge in its opener.
"Virginia is a quality opponent and it will be a tough road challenge but that's what you want," Insell said. "Our young ladies know we have to be focused, pay attention to detail and get our scout into the game. We have had good practices and now it is time to get the season started.
"Coach (Joanne) Boyle does a good job, and Virginia has some experience to go with a good signing class."
Middle Tennessee was dominant in its two exhibition victories, averaging 115.5 points. Every player scored in both games and the team shot a high percentage in each outing. Although Insell knows the competition will be much more stout against Virginia, he said he was still pleased with the way his team performed in the exhibition games.
"It was good to see us execute our offense and get a lot of different players into the game in different situations," Insell said. "What I really liked is the way our young ladies continued to play even when the games were out of control. It really never got sloppy and that was encouraging. Now, Virginia will be a different type team than what we faced in those exhibitions and we know that."
