Lady Raiders open C-USA title defense at UAB

Tipoff set for 2 PM
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Middle Tennessee will open its C-USA title defense in the same city where it captured the 2016 crown when the Lady Raiders face UAB in the league opener here Sunday.
Tipoff at Bartow Arena is set for 2 p.m. with Dick Palmer and Duane Hickey calling the game on WMOT 89.5-FM. Fans may also watch a live stream at CUSA.TV/RaiderVision.
Middle Tennessee (5-6) has won three of its last four entering the UAB game, and the Lady Raiders are 10-1 in conference openers under Head Coach Rick Insell. The Lady Raiders lead the series 8-5. Middle Tennessee is 6-1 against UAB as C-USA members.
The Lady Raiders certainly are battle tested. Their non-conference schedule is rated 13th toughest nationally, and they have the league's second-highest RPI at No. 91.
Middle Tennessee enters the game as one of the best shooting teams in the country. It is 23rd nationally in 3-point field goal percentage, 41st nationally in free-throw percentage and 76th in field goal percentage.
Despite facing a rugged schedule and tough individual competition, several Lady Raiders have performed well. Alex Johnson is third in C-USA and 69th nationally in scoring (17.4). She is coming off of a career-high 30-point performance. Johnson is the only Lady Raider to score double figures in every game this season.
Senior point guard Ty Petty has been remarkable in the non-conference portion of the schedule. Petty enters the UAB game 14 points shy of 1,000 for her career. She is the only player to lead C-USA in three different statistical categories: assists (5.5), free-throw percentage (.892) and minutes (39.4). She is also among the Top 10 in four other categories. Petty is also ranked among the Top 50 nationally in three categories.
Abbey Sissom is also among the leaders. She is fourth in C-USA and 76th nationally for minutes played (34.8), and she is sixth for 3-point field goal percentage.
