MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee is aiming for its third consecutive win in games against SEC opponents when Vanderbilt makes the short trip to Murfreesboro Thursday for a 6:30 p.m. tip.
The Blue Raiders downed Ole Miss on the road on Dec. 3 and defeated Auburn at Bridgestone Arena a season ago. Middle now boasts six wins in their last 11 contests against SEC foes heading into the Vanderbilt game.
Middle Tennessee trails Vanderbilt in the all-time series by a tally of 29-5, but earned a 56-52 win in their last meeting with Commodores at Bridgestone Arena on Dec. 21, 2012.
"This is another really good, offensive Vanderbilt team," Head Coach Kermit Davis said. "They make threes from all five spots and it's a good veteran group back from last year. They've played a really tough schedule to this date."
At 8-1, the Blue Raiders have risen to sixth in the NCAA RPI ratings, having reeled off six straight wins with five in a row coming away from the Murphy Center.
Senior forward JaCorey Williams has paced MT all season offensively, now standing at 19.7 points per game, while Giddy Potts (14.2) and Reggie Upshaw (14.0) give the Raiders three of Conference USA'a Top 14 scorers.
Upshaw leads the Blue Raiders in rebounding (6.9), assists (4.0) and blocks (1.2) while fellow senior Xavier Habersham has posted a 77.3 percent success rate from the field and has hit 76.9 percent of his 3-point attempts on the year.
Vanderbilt (5-4) has a quartet of scorers averaging double-digits on the season, including junior guard Riley LaChance who is 23-of-32 on the year from downtown. Matthew Fisher-Davis leads Vandy with 14.9 points per game while Jeff Roberson is averaging 11.1 points and 7.4 boards per outing.
"Our fans want high-caliber teams in the non-conference and that's what we've got," Davis added. "We've got a good SEC team in here.
"In order to make strides to be a national program we've got to have a growing national fan base and we hope to see a very energetic and great crowd here Thursday night."
