MT Upsets Iowa En Route to Doubleheader Sweep

Winning streak moves to five
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – The Adams Tennis Complex was home to great college tennis on Sunday, as Middle Tennessee pulled off the upset of No. 62 Iowa and followed that up with a shutout over Alabama A&M.
The Hawkeyes struck first in doubles, winning 6-2 at No. 2. The Blue Raiders were not to be counted out, however. Dima Zyhmantovich and Luis Morillo Diaz teamed up to take a 6-4 victory at No. 2, forcing all eyes to be on court 1. Ayed Zatar Cordero and Gonzalo Morell Raschiatore came back from down 4-5 at the No. 1 spot to take clinch the doubles point with a score of 7-5.
"We worked doubles all week and it paid off," head coach Jimmy Borendame said. "If our group keeps focusing on improving every day, we have a lot of potential."
Iowa knotted the match up at 1 point apiece with a win at No. 6. Zyhmantovich answered with a commanding 6-2, 6-4 win at No. 1, putting the Blue Raiders back in the lead for good. Miguel Negre Fernandez put away his opponent at No. 4 in straight sets, 6-1, 7-6 (7-1), meaning MT lacked only one more win to take down another ranked Power 5 team.
Delivering the clinching point was Morell with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-4 win in a tight match at No. 2. Zatar put together a three set win at No. 3, as his final score was 6-4, 2-6, 6-3. It took Morillo three sets to finish his opponent off at No. 5, but he won with a score of 6-4, 3-6, 6-3.
After that 6-1 win over the No. 62 ranked Hawkeyes, MT hosted the Bulldogs of Alabama A&M.
MT clinched the doubles point by taking matches at No. 1 and No. 2 by a score of 6-0. The Blue Raiders were able to start singles play ahead 2-0.
Morell was untouched at No. 2, winning by a score of 6-0, 6-0. Michael Apple clinched the match for the Blue Raiders with a score of 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4.
Jacob Pugh saw his first singles action of the season at No. 5, where he took a 6-0, 6-0 win. Zyhmantovich reeled off five straight games in the second set, as he took the win at No. 1, 6-1, 6-1. Guillermo Artiz Mateo finished off the sweep of the Bulldogs with a 6-1, 6-2 victory at No. 3.
"We want to thank our fans for coming out and being loud," Borendame added. "The crowd at the ATC is our '7th man'."
MT (7-2) will get a few days to prepare for their next matches. They'll host Illinois State and Sewanee at the new Adams Tennis Complex on Feb. 20 starting at 1 p.m. There will be a paper airplane contest and free gear at the match. As always, admission will be free.
