Blue Raiders locked in tight matches on road trip
SAN DIEGO – Middle Tennessee's women's tennis team went on the road to try and reverse the road woes in this 2016 campaign but left California without a win on the week, although they battled hard with their opponents.
The Blue Raiders started off their California trip with a close loss to UC Irvine, 4-3.
MT took the doubles point to start off the match thanks to wins at No. 2 and 3 doubles. Sarah Sediri and Darya Shulzhanok came away with a 6-4 win at No. 2, followed by a narrow 7-5 win by Alory Pereira and Costanza Magazzini.
Giulia Squadrin put the Blue Raiders up 2-0 in the match with a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 5. The Anteaters got on the board with a win at No. 3, 7-5, 6-3, then tied the match up thanks to a win at the No. 2 spot, 7-6 (9-7), 6-2.
Court four saw a close match as well, but UC Irvine took the win there, 7-5, 6-4. Shulzhanok knotted the match back up at 3-3 with a third set tiebreaker win at the top of the lineup, 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (9-7).
The Anteaters won the match at No. 6 to clinch the win over MT, but it was the closest match of the day. UC Irvine took the win in three sets at the bottom of the lineup, 6-7 (1-7), 7-6 (7-4), 6-3.
In the second match of the week, MT was neck-and-neck with San Diego, but the match went unfinished due to rain with a score of 2-2.
The Blue Raiders got off to a hot start by winning the doubles point. Huxley and Squadrin took a 6-3 win at No. 1, followed by Magazzini and Pereira's win at No. 3 by a score of 6-4.
A Torero win at No. 5 tied the match at one point apiece early in the match. Huxley put MT back out in front with a commanding 6-4, 6-2 victory at No. 2. It took three sets, but San Diego won the match at No. 3 to tie the match up at 2-2.
Rain forced the match to be called at 2-2, with three singles matches yet to finish. San Diego was leading in the third set by a score of 4-3 when the rain rolled in. Pereira was up 4-3 in her third set when the match was called. Magazzini was just about to begin her third set.
MT's road trip will continue next weekend, as they'll travel to Tampa, Florida, to face Stetson, Columbia and USF.
The Blue Raiders will return home on March 23 to play Murray State. Murfreesboro will be the home of the 2016 Conference USA Women's Tennis Championships on April 21-24 at the Adams Tennis Complex.
