MT beats Golden Eagles in dramatic win to take first C-USA series of the season
MURFREESBORO – Deja Portillo came up with a clutch base hit in the bottom of the seventh to score Kristin Uselton and Precious Birdsong to lead Middle Tennessee (13-12) to a 3-2 walk-off win over Southern Miss (14-13) to take the first Conference USA series of the season 2-1.
Down by one, Uselton led off the bottom of the seventh with a single and moved to third two batters later when Birdsong doubled to right field. After a nine minute rain delay, the second delay of the game, Portillo came to the plate looking for her first hit of the afternoon. On an 0-2 count Portillo ripped a base hit just over the second basemen's glove into right center that score both runners and gave the Raiders their 13th win of the season.
MT scored in the first inning for the third straight game as Birdsong was hit by a pitch to lead off. After a stolen base and a sacrifice bunt moved Birdsong to third, Dani Munoz drove her home with a single down the left field line.
With the Raiders leading 1-0 after just an inning of play, the rains came and delayed the game 37 minutes. When play resumed Southern Miss was ready as they used three base hits to plate a run in the top of the second and tie the game 1-1.
The Golden Eagles took the lead in the fifth when Lauren Holifield tripled to right field to score Tori Dew for a 2-1 advantage. On the play, Kirstyn Cuccia, one of MT's best freshmen, was injured fielding the ball in right and needed to be carried off the field.
After Southern Miss took the lead, Kelci Cheney settled down in the circle and retired seven of the last nine batters she faced to keep the Raiders in position for their dramatic seventh inning win.
Cheney (9-6) earned the win as she allowed just two runs on seven hits and struck out three in 7.0 innings pitched. Samantha Robles (8-6) took the loss for the Golden Eagles as she gave up all three Raider runs on eight hits.
Middle Tennessee's next game will be Wednesday against Austin Peay Wednesday at 3 p.m. in Clarksville.
