MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – An early deficit doomed the Blue Raiders Tuesday night as they fell to nearby foe Belmont 9-4 at Reese Smith, Jr. Field.
Sam Alton drew the start for Middle Tennessee after striking out nine batters in a stellar performance last Wednesday.
Middle Tennessee (10-7) gave up six runs to Belmont (9-7) before getting through two full innings, making a comeback attempt a tall task early on.
"We just got off to a bad start," head coach Jim McGuire said. "We dug ourselves a hole right off the bat tonight."
Alton got off to a shaky start in the first inning, allowing a couple of base runners before getting a couple of strikeouts. Alton would get out of the inning with a third strikeout, but not before Belmont took the early 1-0 lead.
The Bruins jumped out to a larger lead in the second when they put up five more runs, leading McGuire to go to the bullpen and bring in Will Jackson.
Blake Benefield got the Blue Raiders on the board in the bottom of the second, driving his second home run of the season down the left field line.
Jackson retired the Bruins in order in the third and stayed strong through the fourth, retiring seven of the 10 batters he faced and not allowing Belmont to extend their lead before making way for Carson Lester.
Lester pitched around a one-out double in the fifth and a leadoff walk in the sixth to hold the score at 6-1.
Middle Tennessee cut into the Bruin lead in the bottom of the sixth. Brad Jarreau was walked to start the inning off and Aaron Aucker doubled him home in the next at-bat to bring the Blue Raider deficit to 6-2.
Will Small came on for his first action of the season to start the seventh inning and retired the first two batters he faced. After the strong start, Belmont strung together back-to-back singles followed by a three-run Bruin homer to make the score 9-4.
Austin Dennis and Kevin Dupree collected RBIs in the seventh as the Blue Raiders put up two runs on three hits, but it would be the end of the scoring on the night for MT.
Jake Wyrick allowed a couple of walks in the eighth, but got through the inning thanks to a double play consisting of a strikeout and caught stealing as well as a pop fly.
Freshman Andy Wright pitched the ninth for the Blue Raiders and allowed a couple of base runners but was able to prevent them from crossing the plate.
"We had some really bright spots with some of our guys out of the bullpen, but we just couldn't get hits when guys were in scoring position," McGuire stated.
Middle came back to the plate for one last chance to close the gap on Belmont and Delgado led things off with a double to the gap in right center, but no more batters would reach base as the Blue Raiders fell to the Bruins.
Middle Tennessee opens Conference USA Play this weekend as the No. 15 ranked Florida Atlantic Owls travel to Murfreesboro. MT and FAU begin the series Friday with a 6:00 p.m. first pitch.
