MT faces Vandy Tuesday
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Florida Atlantic jumped on Middle Tennessee for five runs in the first two innings and never looked back as it took a 12-1 win in the rubber game at Reese Smith Jr., Field Sunday.
The 15th-ranked Owls (15-3, 2-1 C-USA) got to starter Jake Wyrick for two runs in the first and added three in the second. Wyrick and relief pitcher Garrett Ring combined to shut the Owls out through the next four innings but the Blue Raider bats couldn't get anything going.
Ring lowered his season earned run average to 0.50. Caleb Smith was also a bright spot out of the bullpen with 1-1-/3 innings of no-hit relief.
Middle Tennessee managed just six hits off of five different Owls' starters, with junior shortstop Riley Delgado leading the way with a 2-for-4 effort. He scored the Blue Raiders' only run in the ninth to avoid the shutout.
Brad Jarreau, Aaron Aucker, A.J. Spencer and Drew Huff each had one hit.
Blue Raider pitchers allowed 14 hits and the defense committed an uncharacteristic six errors, leading to five unearned runs.
Middle Tennessee will conclude its five-game homestand against Vanderbilt Tuesday. First pitch is 6 p.m.
