Jarreau collects two hits in loss
BOWLING GREEN, Ky. – Middle Tennessee received solid pitching but couldn't muster enough offense to salvage the final game of its three-game series at WKU, dropping a 2-1 decision at Nick Denes Field.
The Blue Raiders (12-12, 1-5) generated just three hits but they almost parlayed them into victory before a late rally by the Hilltoppers (14-9, 3-3) thwarted those plans.
Junior outfielder Brad Jarreau had two of Middle Tennessee's three hits and drove in the only run. Catcher Will Schnure also had a base hit.
Jake Wyrick provided five innings of shutout baseball and took the no decision. Wyrick pitched in and out of trouble but battled to give the Blue Raiders a chance at victory. WKU loaded the bases against Wyrick in four of the five innings but failed to score in any of those opportunities.
Relief pitcher Garrett Ring (1-1) finished up with three innings of two-hit baseball. He allowed two runs, one earned, in the bottom of the seventh and was saddled with the loss.
The Blue Raiders were no-hit through five innings but Schnure led off the sixth inning with a walk. Riley Delgado reached on a fielder's choice as Schnure was erased at second. Austin Dennis grounded out to third, allowing Delgado to reach second, and Jarreau followed with a clutch two-out single to break up the no-hitter and provide Middle Tennessee a 1-0 lead.
WKU erased the lead with two runs in the bottom of the seventh. All of the damage came after the first two in the inning were retired.
Middle Tennessee will look to end its three-game losing skid when it travels to Knoxville to face Tennessee Tuesday. First pitch is 5 p.m.
