Box Score
MOBILE, Ala. – Middle Tennessee put up a strong showing but could not protect a slim lead in the middle innings and dropped a 3-2 decision against a strong South Alabama at Stanky Field Saturday.
The Jaguars (8-2) evened the series and set up a decisive third game Sunday. Reid Clements will be on the mound for the Blue Raiders (5-5). First pitch is 1 p.m.
Junior shortstop Riley Delgado continued his smashing start with his sixth multi-hit game of the season. Delgado extended his hitting streak to nine games with a 2-for-4 performance that included one RBI. Brad Jarreau continued to swing a hot bat and produced his second straight multi-hit game, going 2-for-4 with one run scored.
Junior first baseman Kevin Dupree also had a multi-hit game, going 2-for-4. Austin Dennis, Kevin Sullivan and Chaz Vesser also had base knocks for the Blue Raiders, who outhit South Alabama, 9-6. Middle Tennessee pounded out eight hits off of Jaguars starter Austin Bembnowski in five innings, but they managed just one hit against Ryne Long, who provided four innings of one-hit baseball to earn the win.
Blue Raider senior lefty Tyler Troutt (1-1) carried a 2-1 lead into the bottom of the sixth but the Jags came off of the deck with two runs to take a 3-2 lead and their bullpen made it stand.
Middle Tennessee broke a scoreless tie in the top of the fourth when Jarreau led off the inning with a single and eventually came around to score on Dennis' two-out hit for a 1-0 lead.
The Blue Raiders tacked on another run to go on top 2-0 in the fifth when the bottom of the order delivered. Sullivan singled, moved to second on a bunt from Vesser and scored on Delgado's single. Middle Tennessee had a chance to do further damage with runners on first and second with one out after a Jarreau single, but Bembnowski coaxed an inning-ending double play off of the bat of Austin Sistrunk.
South Alabama broke the shutout with one run in the fifth and took the lead with two in the sixth.
Middle Tennessee managed just one base runner against Long, a two-out single by Vesser in the seventh.
