Raiders beat Memphis in rain-shortened game in Jackson
Box Score
JACKSON, Tenn. – Senior right-hander Sam Alton carried Middle Tennessee to a 3-1 win against Memphis Wednesday in a rain-shortened, six-inning contest at the Ballpark at Jackson.
Alton recorded all but one out in the contest, pitching five and two-thirds innings while recording nine strikeouts to just three walks and allowing only three hits and one earned run.
"It was a great outing tonight by Sam Alton," head coach Jim McGuire said. "He competed well against a good team under tough conditions."
Junior shortstop Riley Delgado recorded three singles and an RBI at the plate to extend his hitting streak to 12 games.
"Riley Delgado had another good night and we got good production by the bottom of the lineup again tonight as well," McGuire added.
Alton started the night strong, striking out two Memphis batters in the first inning.
After allowing the Tigers to load the bases in the top of the second, Alton worked out of the jam to preserve the scoreless tie.
Moving into the third frame Memphis got another runner on base by way of a walk before Vaughn Shapen, seeing his first action behind the plate this season, fired to first to pick off the runner and end the inning.
The Blue Raiders struck first in the bottom of the third inning. Delgado led off the inning with a single and after being pushed around to third he scored on the first of freshman Blake Benefield's two hits on the night.
Alton continued to mow down the Tigers in the fourth, striking out three batters in the inning to keep the Blue Raiders on top 1-0.
The Raiders tacked two more runs on in the fourth on back-to-back singles by Shapen and Delgado to take a 3-0 advantage into the fifth inning.
After minimal action in the fifth, Alton toed the rubber to start the sixth, recording his eighth and ninth strikeouts of the game. However, the Sonoma, Calif., native allowed a run to cross with two outs before making way for freshman Carson Lester.
Lester walked the first batter he faced before getting a ground ball to second baseman Kevin Sullivan to end the inning.
The rainfall then forced the umpires to call the game, giving the Blue Raiders the win and Lester his first career save.
Middle Tennessee travels to Kennesaw State next for a weekend series against the Owls which is set to begin Friday at 6:00 p.m.
