MT pounds out 11 runs to beat the Bruins
Precious Birdsong beat out three infield singles to go 3-for-4, scored two runs and stole four bases on the night. Austyn Whaley committed three errors in the field, but rebounded to go 1-for-4 at the plate with a run scored, two RBIs and turned two great double plays in the field.
Kelci Cheney started the game, but got into trouble after allowing two runs on six hits in just 3.0 innings of work. Pattie Taylor (5-4) came out of the bullpen once again and earned the win for MT as she allowed four runs on five hits in 4.0 innings and benefitted from the offensive explosion.
Dani Munoz helped MT get on the scoreboard first as she deposited a base hit into right field in the top of the first. Payton Grove scored from second on the play and the Raiders were quickly on top 1-0.
Carlie Jenkins led off the second inning with a deep drive to right field. It just did stay in Rose Park, but Jenkins was able to scurry to third with a triple. As the ball was thrown in from the outfield, second base Kayla Wells through the ball into the Belmont dugout and Jenkins was awarded home because of the error. After a single run in each of the first two innings, MT led Belmont 2-0.
In the bottom of the second Amy Zeronian reached on an error to lead things off for the Bruins. Shersty Stanton followed with a home run to left field and just like that the game was tied 2-2 after two innings.
The Raiders finally put a crooked number on the board in the third as Birdsong and Grove each reached to begin the inning. Morgan Harris followed with a base hit to left center to bring home Birdsong, and two batters later Whaley atoned for two early errors with a two-run double to right center. After the top of the third MT regained the lead 5-2.
Middle Tennessee was not done scoring yet as Birdsong picked up another infield hit, stole second and third, then scored on a wild pitch in the fourth. After the top of the fourth the Raiders had scored in every inning and led the Bruins 6-2.
Belmont used two base hits and a walk to load the bases and knock out Raider starter Kelci Cheney with no outs in the bottom of the fourth. But Whaley turned an unassisted double play, and reliever Pattie Taylor got a ground out to end the inning and MT walked the tight rope out of danger to preserve their 6-2 lead.
The Bruins held MT scoreless in the fifth, then put together a rally of their own in the bottom half. A single by Kayla Wells allowed her to score on Baylee Cook's double to cut the lead to 6-3. Two batters later Cook scored on Jordan Spicer's sacrifice fly to Lauren Payne in right and the lead was trimmed to two, 6-4.
In the sixth the Raiders sent 11 batters to the plate and scored five more runs. Jenkins was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to force home Grove. Megan Griffith followed with a pinch hit two-run single to plate Whaley and Harris. Deja Portillo and Jenkins executed the double steal to score Jenkins, Lauren Riddell followed with a pinch hit hit-by-pitch to re-load the bases for Birdsong. The MT center fielder then walked to force home Portillo for the fifth run of the inning and an 11-4 MT lead.
Belmont did not go quietly as with one out in the seventh they strung three singles together to score Cook. Zeronian followed with a groundout to plate Sami Long and the Bruins were able to cut the final score to 11-6.
Middle Tennessee will back home Saturday as they host UTEP in a double header at Blue Raider Softball Field. The first game is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
