HATTIESBURG, Miss. – Bright spots did shine through for the Blue Raiders (14-17, 2-9) on Saturday, but a couple of comeback attempts fell short as they fell to the Golden Eagles (24-8, 10-1) in Hattiesburg by a score of 9-5.
Riley Delgado went 3-for-4 with an RBI while Drew Huff had a couple of two-out RBI singles for Middle Tennessee. Freshman Carson Lester also provided a strong appearance out of the bullpen, going two and two-thirds innings with five strikeouts while allowing one run on three hits.
Delgado led off the game with a single to left field, but the Blue Raiders failed to any damage beyond that in the first frame.
After a couple of quick outs in MT's half of the second inning, Kevin Sullivan put a drive into the second pitch he saw but the right fielder made a leaping catch at the wall to rob an extra base hit.
After the first Golden Eagle batter was hit by pitch in the second inning, Chaz Vesser threw down to Delgado and nail the runner trying to steal second and clear the basepaths.
Tyler Troutt started the day on the mound for Middle Tennessee, cruising through the first two innings before Southern Miss jumped on the Blue Raiders with four runs on five hits in the third frame.
Huff got the Blue Raiders on the board in the top of the fourth with a two-out, RBI single to left field scoring Brad Jarreau. The Golden Eagles fired back with two more runs in the fourth as Troutt gave way for Carson Lester who ended the frame with a strikeout.
Middle fought back into the game in the top of the fifth with a two-out rally. With Delgado on second and Jarreau, Aaron Aucker doubled to center field to score both runners.
A couple of batters later Huff came through again with a line drive single to left field, scoring Aucker from second base to close the gap to 6-4.
Lester worked a perfect fifth inning with a couple of strikeouts and logged two more strikeouts in the sixth after three straight hits to start the inning extended the USM lead to 7-4.
The seventh inning was scoreless on both sides for the first time since the second frame with Reid Clements getting a strikeout and two ground outs in the top half.
The eighth inning got off to a good start for the Blue Raiders as Blake Benefield broke out of a slump with a double to the wall in right center. He scored from third two batters later on a ground ball to shortstop by Delgado.
Southern Miss killed Middle Tennessee's momentum in the bottom half of the inning as the Eagles struck for a couple of runs on a two-out home run, extending their lead back out to four runs by a score of 9-5.
The Blue Raiders had one last chance in the ninth, but failed to make anything happen allowing Southern Miss to lockdown the series win.
Middle Tennessee will look to salvage the series and gain a little momentum on Sunday as they face Southern Miss in the series finale at 1:00 p.m.
