MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee baseball added another arm to the pitching staff with the signing of junior college transfer Tyler Holcombe, head coach Jim McGuire announced on Thursday.
A native of Conyers, Ga., Holcombe joins the Blue Raiders after spending one season at Gordon State College and will have three years of eligibility remaining after redshirting his rookie campaign at Georgia Perimeter College.
"Tyler is a right-handed pitcher who throws low three-quarters and could provide us with valuable depth in a lot of different roles," McGuire said. "He ended up starting in junior college and was very effective so he could work into a starting role for us but also has potential in long relief or short relief."
Holcombe racked up 56 strikeouts to just 20 walks across 18 appearances totaling 70 innings in 2016, earning eight starts on the year and going 5-4 with one save. With just 21 earned runs allowed on the season, he finished the year with a 2.70 ERA and notched a pair of complete games against East Georgia State College and Andrew College.
The 6-foot-3, 185 pound righty spent the summer of 2015 with the Gwinnett Tides of the Sunbelt League, where he went 4-1 in nine appearances with a 3.44 ERA. He logged 30 strikeouts to just 10 walks in 34 innings of work with the Tides.
Holcombe was a standout at the prep level as well, going 7-3 as a senior at Heritage High School with wins against a pair of defending state championship teams in Lovett and Redan while also tossing a no-hitter against Cedar Shoals.
"Tyler will be very similar to what we got with Jake Wyrick in that he is a guy that already has college experience but still has room to improve and grow with three years to play at Middle Tennessee."
