Raiders drop season finale to FIU 6-3
MIAMI – Middle Tennessee's (23-31, 6-18) offense got on track as Austyn Whaley hit her sixth home run of the season, but FIU (29-26, 12-12) took the season finale 6-3 Sunday.
The Raiders held FIU scoreless in the first for the first time in the series, but the Panthers bats got going in the second. The first two batters in the inning singled for FIU, then a fielder's choice put runners at first and third. A.J. Belans stole second which allowed Gabby Spallone to steal home and the Panthers were on the scoreboard. Two batters later Corinne Jenkins homered to score Belans and FIU led 3-0 after two innings.
The bottom of the third saw the Panthers keep their offense going. Stephanie Texeira doubled home Ashley Leon, then two batters later Aleima Lopez singled home Texeira and FIU increased their lead to 5-0.
Middle Tennessee's offense got started in the fourth as Megan Griffith led off with a base hit and Whaley followed with her sixth home run of the season. Then, with two outs, Precious Birdsong singled to bring home Deja Portillo and the Raiders cut the Panther lead to 5-3 after the top of the fourth.
FIU got a run back in the bottom of the fifth as Lauren Williams singled through the left side. Belans scored on the play and increased their lead to 6-3 after five innings.
Kelci Cheney (14-16) took the loss as she allowed five runs on seven hits in 2.2 innings. Pattie Taylor pitched well again out of the bullpen as she went 3.1 and allowed only one run while scattering seven hits.
