Nishimoto notches game-winning goal in 84th minute
MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – Middle Tennessee opened up the 2016 season Friday night with a thrilling, 1-0, win against Jacksonville State after an 84th minute header by Haley Nishimoto sealed the win late.
The Blue Raiders and Gamecocks were extremely competitive throughout, but it was MT who appeared more aggressive for most of the match. The Blue Raiders logged 19 shots to JSU's five while holding a 6-2 advantage in shots on goal.
True freshman Sydney Chalcraft made her debut in goal on the night and performed well while only really being challenged by one shot on goal in each half to log her first career shutout.
Another pair of true freshmen shined on the offensive end as Salera Jordan logged a team-high four shots while Sam DeBien notched a pair of shots on goal.
Jacksonville State logged the first shot on goal in just the third minute of action, but it was all Blue Raiders for the remainder of the first half as they finished out the first 45 minutes up 10-2 in shots.
The second half was much of the same as Middle Tennessee continued to look like they might be able to break through before the end of regulation.
It was Nishimoto's first career goal that finally ended the deadlock, as she flicked a header inside the far post on a cross from the left side by Kerri Cook.
Jacksonville State applied some offensive pressure as they looked to equalize late, but the Blue Raider defense held strong to preserve the season-opening win.
Middle Tennessee returns to action on Aug. 25 when they take on Jackson State in a neutral site contest played at Vanderbilt.
